Someone care to shed some light?

Say I wanted to sign up for that R29 per gig.

I just want to understand all the costs involved including the 29 bucks per gig.

Eg.
Line renatal how much am I looking at?
What other costs are involved and how much on average would one pay on telephone bill...say for example you only use it for ADSL and you only used 2gigs for that month?

Eish... search is king...

R131 line rental
plus ADSL rental (R152 for 384k, R326 for 512k, R413 for 4mbps*)
plus data usage - R29/GB from Afrihost

*These are maximum attainable speeds, not necessarily realised speeds.

Afrihost only offer ADSL data - you will have to go somewhere else for line rental.

First off, you need to have a voice line from Telkom. The cost is R131 p.m. Next you need to activate the line for ADSL services. (Make sure that your local exchange can support ADSL). You can rent your ADSL line from Telkom at a cost of R152 for 384 kb/s line speed. You pay more for a faster line spped. So your cost is R283 for the basic line. Now you need to buy data. Afrihost offer it for R29/GB.

Or you can buy a pre-packaged line from an ISP that includes ADSL line rental plus a pre-allocated amount of data eg 3GB. Telkom offer a Do2 package that includes a 384 line plus 3 GB of data for R258. So your total cost for thsi would be R389 including voice rental. Cybersmart will be offering a 384 line plus 2GB of data for R175 p.m. There are many different options and packages available. Do some reasearch.

You will of course pay separately for any voice calls made.

A total rip off. All I want is the ADSL connection TELSCUM sucks:eek:

I am prepared to pay that and the cost of data

it's R544 for 4mbps (tax included)

Haven't studied the 3 line speed rentals for a while. What a rip off 512 is! Pay more then 100% premium over 384 yet the increase in speed isn't even 25%. What a joke! 512 isn't worth it in my eyes. Pay more to get the meg line or sit with a slightly slower line than 512 in the form of a 384 line

Thanks for reply...

I've come to a conclusion that this is B*ll sh*t..... I will not pay R131 + R413 + R29, just for 1 Gig....this is ofcourse assuming that I would have used 1 gig for that month.

Then the hype about R29 per gig....is ridiculous if you ask me.

If you are already paying R131 + R413 then paying R29 per GB is considerably better than paying R69 per GB. Also, R413 is the most expensive of the line speeds, if you're only using 1 GB / month, 384k would be more appropriate.

Welcome to the state of Internet in SA thanks to Telkom. We've been saying this for years - maybe you can try your luck getting ICASA to listen.

Yeah I just noticed this as well - why pay more than double for only 128kb more? might as well get 2 x 386kb lines and pay LESS

512 has been a rip off for a while.

If they were clever they would sell it at 512, 1 meg and 4 meg. Then the prices would make more sense.

Well even to logic... because i'm sure a lot of people that cant afford 4 meg would go for 1 meg if it was in the 512 price range.... they would actually make more money

My biggest gripe is with the R131 POTS line rental. I don't even have a handset connected to my line.

Why does ICASA not force Telkom to offer naked ADSL ? This will go a long way to make "broadband" more affordable.

Welcome to the club. So it has been for many a year now. Sadly.

Because the Naked ADSL will be more expensive than the mix, so, it's a pointless exercise in the wrong direction.
