Communications Minister Nyanda slams mobile operators

Props to the DoC and the minister for the words uttered, but please continue to keep the ball rolling - effectively.

According to The Weekender ICASA has already conceded that the cost to terminate calls is no more than 40c a minute, and that the regulator can follow a new policy directive from the Communications Minister to impose a cost based rate.

“We are convinced that the conclusion of our regulatory work, as outlined in the law, remains the most optimal way to the resolution of these matters. This process will also be concluded by end of this financial year (31 March 2010),” ICASA concluded.

As for ↑, if they (Icasa) conceded that the amount is 40c and that they are convinced about the optimal way in which to resolve the matter; Why did it have to take this long to get some activity out of the regulator?

Without the Portfolio Committee and DoC breathing down Icasa's necks, of late, we would still be in the same position.

Let's hope Icasa can stick to it's guns and the dates it has set out for itself. :(

“Given that the moral suasion process did not yield positive results, the Authority will nevertheless continue with its regulatory processes of developing a framework for competition and cost-based pricing in the voice market as set out in Chapter 10 of the Electronic Communications Act (ECA),” ICASA said.

Good to see the Minister sticking to his guns.

Strange that he doesn't have similarly harsh words for telkom and the mess they've created in the fixed line business. One might even wonder if they have some sort of agenda...

Communications Minister Nyanda slams Telkom over inflated broadband costs

We would all like to see that headline -
Why is Telkom CEO & Exco not listening to Industry, Staff and drop prices ?
They are loaded with cash from the sale of Vodacom

Alternate headline: "Minister accuses water of being wet"
Of course they want to make as much profit as they possibly can, it's their job, duh.

interconnect does not interest me. What about friggin Telkom charging me R100 a month for an analog line I don't use?

Telkom's answer is really simple:
The 2 copper cables that run to the DSLAM are most definitely used, this is the line rental portion.
The DSLAM itself and the fibre connecting the DSLAMs to the backbone is the ADSL line rental portion.

wtf??? am I reading right here?? the Minister of Comm's is actually speaking our language :) You go boy!

Enough of this moral suasion with MTN and Vodacom. Just hit them where it hurts the most. THEIR BOTTOM LINE! If they dont concur, FINE THEIR ASSES!

Vodacom and MTN colluded with themselves over the weekend. Come Monday nobody bent over. This is good news, I hope he knocks it to 60c and asymmetrical. And in 3 months it is 40c and still asymmetrical - I know I am dreaming.

MTN and Vodacom, I hope you get nailed!

Nyanda further slated ICASA for “veering from its mandate to regulate and had ‘no business in politics and in trying to persuade (the operators) to do anything”.

Well said. :D

Smear some vaseline vodacon, mtn and icasa... It's your turn to take it up the **s...and there are many of us...

Yipi! Yipi! Yipi! Ay'khona lets hope for the best. But did i read that right is it gonna happen March 2010? Or wat?
