Why does the SABC get the license payment and not any of the others?

Is it not ICASA that provides them with the spectrum to broadcast? If anything, ICASA should be the ones to who we pay TV licenses.

Because sabc x3 channels are free to view(with gov mandate) the other one is a free-to-air or pay-tv. The problem etv/free-to-air has rightfully raised however was that they can't be getting licence fees and advertising revenue.

Icasa is funded directly via taxes and licences to various communication operators. The problem is they seem take more care about these operators than the tax payers.. if it continues tax payers should complain about footing their bill.

Very few people pay in any case... Think they want to get this out of way before digital TV launch.

I'd love to hear the justifications of anyone voting 'no' in this poll.

How about this: Now you can choose to own a TV and pay a TV license. If paying for it is scrapped, the money is coming out of your paycheck in the form of income tax whether you like it or not. I'd love to hear the justifications of anyone voting 'yes' on this poll.

The difference is though say your earn 10k a month:
With TV License:

R10k - R1125 Tax - R125 TV License = R 8750

Without TV License:
R10k - R1125 = R 8875

R 8875 > R 8750

Verdict, not paying a TV license saves you money, whether they take it out of tax or not.

Do you even know what your tax money goes into? No, I thought not ... thats because you pay it each month and thats that, its over and done with. You will not even notice if they use it to pay for a TV license or not ... there are thousands of things your tax money gets put into, or would you rather they don't pay for community services that you don't use out of your tax money and start charging license fees to everyone that does use them, you may be thinking yes ... but at the end of the day, you will still have the same money going out of your pocket and maybe even more leaving your pocket if you do decide to use it, so its better to not pay a license right?

I get you're point, you don't want to be forced to pay for something you don't use, but you're sitting with more money at the end of the day then if you had a TV license, so you should be all for it.

shame.... what are all the collections attorneys going to do now?? ;)

though i'm sure they will try their best to still illigally harrass people for prescribed debts!
(just read the stories on hellopeter)

I totally agree. I also think that we should pay our car licenses to, say, .. Volkswagen so that they can make their cars a little cheaper. Sound fair?...

I voted no. Right now i dont own a tv set and i dont pay a tv license. If they scrap the license part it means they intend getting their funding elsewhere, like form the govt ( aka income tax ). Then i will still sit without a tv but now i'll no longer have a choice if i wanna pay it or not.

They should rather make it part of the subscription you have to pay for those new digital boxes that everyone is gong to have to get when analogue tv goes bye-bye.

The money will also be coming from VAT, and everyone pays VAT. :)

It should be Arial Licence, what If I just want a TV to watch DVDs or play Xbox, why should I have to pay SABC anything, when I'm not even watching their rubbish

(I voted yes)

You are thinking about this the wrong way. First of all, there's a massive difference between my tax money going to community services and my tax money going to the SABC. Secondly, I don't have a TV, so I don't pay a TV license anyway, I'm not saving any money. Thirdly, theoretically my tax money is supposed to benefit me in some way, be it by going into road/city maintenance, subsidies, community services, whatever. Taking R125 from every South African's tax return and giving it to the SABC takes money away from other avenues our tax money would have gone to, putting us all in a worse position.

So it's not better to get the TV license money out of our tax at all.

Not a good idea, taking R125 * 5.5mil = R687m cut out of the country's tax budget to go to the SABC executives pockets instead.

You don't own anything that receives a TV signal?

We had a visit from a TV license inspector at the place I worked once. After an inspection he issued us with a fine for not having a license. The reason? We had a video machine which was used to show training videos for staff. Because it was capable of receiving a signal we needed a license!

thats the kind of BS im talking about

I've thought about it some more and you convinced me to vote "yes". In a perfect world, tax goes to maintaining and improving the country and everybody who watches TV pays to watch it. South Africa is not a perfect world. Here few people who watch TV pays for their license and the government is already bailing out the SABC without tax money anyway. Taking the license fee away and getting that money from tax solves both these problems.
