Mobile calls at 99c per minute from FNB Connect

I guess they're doing this in expectation of an interconnect rate cut.

Others must follow quickly. Then ICASA and DOC will see what MTN and VodaCom are doing and put tougher measures on the cards for them.

Expect legal action from Cell C. FNB Connect is presumably only able to do this because they get discounted LCR (interconnect bypass) rates, which are denied to Cell C by MTN and Vodacom. This may even bypass ICASA and go straight to the Competition Commission, since it is clearly blatant discrimination, and inherently anti-competitive. We're going to have real fireworks now.

What so different about this compared to what Virgin tried last year (or earlier this year) when they too had about 60 days worth of cheap rates?

I just don't like the idea of a bank getting involved in the telecomms arena.
Reckon there must be some cross subsidising. :rolleyes:

I doubt it, they're probably just subsidising it in the interim until interconnect rates drop, why would MTN and Vodacom discount their rates for FNB?
 
They probably using SIM Banks and place community sim cards in them. Their costisaround R 0.60 per minute and selling it at R0.99 per minute.

still making a nice profit, but hey - it is nice that it will benefit clients.

the caller ID to cellular numbers may be blocked to achieve this, if they show the caller ID of your 087 number received from them, then that may be direct interconnect and not bulk sim banks with community sim cards.

would be great to hear the facts about this
 
Hmmm, what after Feb 2010? Jack the prices up and rely on consumer inertia? Forgive my natural suspicion...

Or maybe they will keep it at this - this could be a trial to see how it works and if it is profitable; or to get more clients on board.

I have FNBConnect on my phone and CLI does work. My contract has expired and this is another reason to convert to prepaid.
