Do you think Broadband Infraco will break Telkom's stranglehold on telecoms in SA?

If they do have city to city network, then great, but what is the cost of that link to an isp and further more does that mean it currenttly mean it doesn't have a city network????

I have also been hoping for the same all along. If this is done right, Infraco might just help us out a lot.

AMAZING

Broadband Infraco will break Telkom’s stranglehold

ISPA welcomes licensing of Broadband Infraco, but promises vigilance around its role in the market

Perhaps I am just too curious

But

In amongst all this hype etc etc I am not finding any really SOLID / DETAILED information about
just exactly what infrastructure they have inherited
HOW they intend to implement their use of it
What impact it will have on the market
Are they going to be competing against Telkom -- or will they complement Telkom

etc etc .............

When it comes to the technical / difficult questions there is just a "black" hole

Sent them email yesterday morning -- STILL -- waiting for a reply

NOT a good start

we are going have another dualopoly; just like mtn "broke" vodacom and cell c "braking" them.

That always makes me nervous. So when huge issues of mis-management arise in the future, the government [ *couch* tax payer *cough* ] might have to bail them out.

Let me get this right - To break the monopoly of Telkom (a State owned company), they have given the licences to INFRACO (another State owned company). Smoke and mirrors man - smoke and mirrors. I can't believe how easy they pull the wool over the eyes of so many people.

To simplify, let's say I own a large company, which has the monopoly in a certain industry... To make the market fairer for the consumer, I am allowed to buy and own another company to compete with my first company?

And this is competition? I think not. It’s BS.

Just enforce LLU, give [-]infraco and neetel[/-] others like infraco, neotel and for example webafrica or internet solutions access to the local loop, and you're sorted.

there ;).

even throw in some vodacom and mtn...

Agrees with Necuno.

The more companies are given access to the local loop, the better.

Otherwise it's no good that world+dog can lay their cables between cities, but we still are dependant upon telkom for the local loop.

Weren't Infraco's originally part of the SNO?

In fact were they not the basis upon which the SNO was to be formed?

Damn right.
Then they decided to charge the SNO some obscene amount to lease or something with exclusive rights to it.

Just enforce LLU, give infraco and neetel access to the local loop, and you're sorted.

+1

there ;).

even throw in some vodacom and mtn...

Well said - Some Altech Autopage too - hell to anyone whom has those I-ECNS licenses!

Roll it out mofos!!!!!

Wasnt LLU supposed to be completed by next year? Have they even started?

I think the technical part of LLU is not as complex as the regulatory part. And with ICASA in charge of that, it might take some time.

I am sooooo tired of all the bull that has gone on wrt to our communications industry.

For me its simple. I go to the source of the problem. ANC!!

Get rid of them and then we can start making some decent progress. As long as they are in power, smoke and mirrors will be the order of the day!!

ITS SOOO FRUSTRATING!!! ARGG!!!
