Linksys WRT54G3G Router [used with 3G|HSDPA & HSUPA PCMCIA data cards]

Going through its paces as we speak.

Did not want to be accused of premature announciation (is that a new word?), so were waiting for the products guys to get everything in place.

It's pretty much the 3G/WiFi access point/router thingy we were waiting for with a nice feature in that it takes any standard data card, i.e. you plug your data card (Option, Novatel, HSDPA, etc.) into it.

Already asked and don't have a launch time yet but I know it's soon.

So is this thing strictly wireless, or does it have wired ethernet ports as well that can interface with my existing wired/wireless router?

Don't think so, the unit's firmware will have to have drivers for the card. Put some pressure on Gigabyte!

I was thinking the same ... Should need some different firmware, as the current configs make provision for 802.11 setup ...

Very similiar to the EV-DO based Junxtion box on sale in the USA.

Verizon loaths it because people can make their own hotspots with it.

"First, as is discussed in the initial article, wireless carriers aren't going to be thrilled about multiple people using a single connection, which would be a violation of their terms of service."

Now I wonder if this thing from Linksys and Vodaphone prevents you from sharing the connection ???.

any clues when this will actually be available to the public, and the pricing? I'm rather excited by the prospects!

I do not think it will be too expensive, they are not doing anything fancy. They have simply added a PCMCIA slot which normally sells for R300 or so.

Regular Wifi Router is about R700 added to R300 for the slot and R500 or so in developement of firmware and rape costs. I suspect R1500 will be the starting price internationally, could be as high as R2000 in south africa.

In my book, that still ranks as expensive :( ... but I'd prolly still be "happy" to shell at the green ones for the convieniance factor!

It is expensive if you consider that you would still need to fork out R3k for the 3G card, but I am sure that by this time next year you will be able to get the router for under R1000.

What really needs to drop in price is the datacard, R3000 is insane, you can get a 6630 which is a complete phone with 3G for the same price if not less.

well, luckily for me, I arleady have the 3G data card * phew * ... so, I'll be waiting for the router and combined with that outdoor antenna ... should work really well :D

sounds promissing :) ... so hopefully in the next month or two? ;)

hope they won't be too pricey though :p

Attached a picture of the upcoming Linksys 3G / WLAN Router.

Interfaces include a 3G data card in a PCMCIA slot, WiFi and a 4-port Ethernet switch.

Software includes the normal routing, firewall, DHCP, NTP, etc.

This unit is designed to act as an external 3G access point, allowing one or multiple computers to connect to the 3G network using one single shared connection.

It does not have a built-in 3G radio, so you need one of the external 3G data cards. This then plugs into the onboard PCMCIA slot. This implies you can upgrade the card as new technologies become available.

Since no software is needed on the end-user computer (except for TCP/IP support), it will allow all non-supported OS's to use 3G.

It's especially suited to SOHO and SME applications.

Before you'all ask, no set release date but (very) soon is heard a lot. :)
