Internet Solutions’ ADSL back on track

Well done IS.

As I mentioned in the other thread yesterday. I think IS' anouncement was a warning shot to Telkom and it seems to have worked ;)

So from January until now 55 Meg + 70 Meg has mysteriously appeared out of nowhere when there is no capacity. Who is this bandwidth fairy?

And if it is really 400m, have they ever heard of UTP? I think high school kids setup much more complicated networks. Why does IPConnect uses ATM!? Duh!? Isn't the IP in IPConnect suppose to give you a clue?

Hi Wantedz & others

I have just spoken to IS and they informed me that some clients were ‘moved around’ to make additional bandwidth available. They will however still upgrade the link and get an additional 155 Mbps IPC connection…

Do you mean was it IS or Telkodemonopolies that moved the clients around?
I think it was a joined effort by the two companies, but Telkom at least played a significant role according to IS. I am still waiting for Telkom’s feedback…this will most likely shed some light on the issue.

Err... The problem is not on the IP layer. IP runs over ATM and TCP/UDP over IP. Their problem is with the ATM routers. It IS a big job, but Telkom is still at fault for not planning better.

ATM is an overkill for 400m. You can go to your local computer shop and get 2 gigabit switches and a roll of cable and solve this chop-chop. And then the 155Mbps and I don't know how many 100 of 1000s of Ronds that the ATM installation cost will look really silly. And then when IPC link number 4 needs to be installed you go through the same growing pains again ...

Rule 1: Use the right tech for the job.

Oops. I forgot they have to justify why IPC is almost as expensive as the same SAT3 bandwidth.

Principle 1: Overcharge. (well this just could not be rule 2)

Feedback?

"Telkom was asked for comment regarding this issue but did not supply any feedback."

Were they really expecting any feedback? My opinion is that you ask for comments from Telkom just as a curtesy, and that it is the right thing to do. But then again, Telkom does not know what is right, and so won't be able to supply feedback.

AND ... ask all the "what if?" questions UP FRONT ... not when the wheels fall off the bus ... right? Too much to expect from Telscum ... ?
