My ADSL link goes through phases of dropping carrier every minute or two, making it virtually useless since it has to re-sync in time for the next drop, giving you about 30 seconds of access every 2 minutes. This lasts an hour or two or three, then it goes away, and life is fine for a day or two.

A week ago, in fury, I logged the fault and then enlisted the help of my excellent ISP SAInternet, who got their Telkom contacts to flag it as urgent, a repeat fault, and all that. Telkom promised that the next available tech would come out that day, then on Saturday, then promises for Monday, then Tuesday. The next available tech calls today - 1 week later.

Tech: - is the line working?
Me: - at the moment yes
Tech: - So I can log this as fixed?
Me: - no - it is an intermittent fault
Tech: - well I can't help unless it is not working
Me: - how then do I get an intermittent fault fixed?
Tech: - report it when it is not working
Me: - but then it will take you a week to come out and it will be working again
Tech: - yes, but I can't fix it unless it is not working
Me: - well give me your number and I'll call you when it drops
Tech: - no we can't do that
Me: - well can you put a monitor on it so you can diagnose it when it happens
Tech: - no we don't have such equipment
Me: - well how do I get it fixed?
Tech: - report it when it is not working
......

Typical this is. Of the whole telkom mentality. So sad.

I would go down to ur nearest telkom shop and make a scene. Do it somewhere obvious, where lots of people will see, and kick up a real fuss. Maybe that will get u noticed and ur problem at least looked at...

Peter, you should have fought!

Oh I am waaaaaay from finished with this one! I too have contacts at Telkom!!!

They talking crap they do have monitors. I logged a call in my area that I had a ADSL line that was intermittendly loosing its sync and they came out 3 days later on a sunday! They even gave me a test modem to check if it isnt my modem. They put a monitor on my line and later the problem just "disapeared" after their visit.

But I must say the service I got was good, not at all what I was expecting.

Sounds normal to me. Telkom is the worst company this country could even think of supporting..

They are full of ****, and they don't give a f#$k about you, they only care about your money, and if they could do something that will make you pay more, they will. We've had intermittend line drops for the past month now, it disconnects for a minumum of 15 times a day. Yet, I'm bein told it's my ISP, which I have switched a few times already. When phoning telkom you either need to wait 5 minutes (after which I put the phone down), or you get through to someone who doesn't care what you have to say or what your problem is, or you're being told some bull**** story, like this one....

just my 2c

Hey guys

I am glad I am not the only person struggling with Telkom! I have waited 5months for a replacement for my telephone line from the pole outside!

So I finally asked them to put the speed back to 10Mbs and guess what it still loses its connection! It has a ppp connection with an orange light that makes a click noise and it looks like there is another orange light inside that light that flickers, while this is going on I can’t use the internet. Then finally its clicks back on again just to click straight away off again!

So from your discussions it looks like I need to log an ADSL line that is intermittently loosing its sync with Telkom........................ whish me luck!

Just check to see if your exchange can handle 10Mbps, My exchange apparently can only handle 4Mbps and even then it still drops the line I have had to drop my line speed down to 3Mbps. It works but does go off every night when the street lights come on for about half and hour.

LOL! Sorry but I find that rather odd and funny :D

I hate telkom, every time i see a telkom van on the road i want to strangle that person.

guys do you know who i can call if they havent gone to my exchange to replace a faulty cable yet, Telkom keeps on telling me someone will call when its been dispatched and ive been waiting for 2 weeks now :(

Well im not sure if my exchange can handle those speeds, i have made the speed slower and it works good till 8mbps any faster and ur back to dial up lol. So i did some research and apparently the distance from u and the exchange play a big role in how fast ur speed will be compared to what u should get and also how stable the connection should be. Here's some useful reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Subscriber_Line_Access_Multiplexer

I have since gone over to MWEB uncapped 4mbps and its gooooood, endless downloads no more interrupted connections. It loses sync still but once every 3 days and i got a new D-Link modem and its start-up is like 10sec versus Telkom’s one of 2mins..

I had the exact same problem with my 4mbps line on Parkview exchange, It was worst when the wind blew a lot or it rained (it would disconnect for 12 hours or more).I decided to climbed one of the poles to check if I could fix the problem myself, since telscam techies had been at my place at least 10 times before to try fix it. In the process I yanked the main line and I apparently disconnected out whole line. 3 days later a telscam techie arrived and went from pole to pole and fixed the problem. So far I have a higher sync rate with no disconnection problems.

When I reported my fault, the tech told me "Sir there is no problem, you are just imagining it, now just put the phone down..." seriously wtf, I've logged 27 faults its been 3 months now and they have done nothing besides sms'ing me "we have resolved the problem. Please do not reply to this sms"

Telkom totally useless

hahaha yeah yanking the whole line that can be fun! Oh well i think im sorted now. I do notice when it rains it looses connection why oh why would that happen??? Somewhere there must be a open place somewhere, things like this would make me go work for Telkom just so that i can go from pole to pole to check all the connections but no Telkom tecs just wanna sit in the van and eat doughnuts because they dont worry, because they dont have to have internet at home they get it for free at the office and prop at 20mbps!
