I don't know where better to ask this, so here it is:

Why has my cell info display (i.e. cell tower names) changed from the usual description (e.g. "Uitenhage") to a percentage value, e.g. "20%" or "70%"

What does this percentage mean? What is the point of it if no-one knows what it is for, or was it marketed?

Perhaps you can help MTN_DD?

Thanks,
Nicolas

Must be an Eastern Cape thing. I'm in Cape Town and getting the usual broadcasts. What do you guys get on channel 900?

Sorry ginggs, what do you mean by "channel 900"? I'm still using a Nokia 6100 and only now looking at choosing a 3G phone - hence the wrong-forum disclaimer in my original post.

Thats fine. Go to Messages / Info Messages and enable Info service.
Then go to Topics, Add and enter 900 for the Topic number and Tower Info (I don't know the official name) for the name.
You should start getting information appearing on your screen much like cell info. If you miss any you can always go to Info Messages and choose Read.

Other channels or topics (official name is Message Identifier) you can try are 40 for weather, 50 for cell info (official name is District Information), 250 which seems to be a duplicate of 50, 900 for tower info and 910 for antenna info.

And see this thread too for another description of the promo, and for info on how to register/unregister, etc
