Something funny here... instead of the usual names the cell id on MTN in my area is displaying "30%" .. that's it, just "30%"
My brother says he also noticed it displaying "40%" and "70%" ...

Anyone have a clue what it's about?

Oh and I'm also picking up EDGE, which as I don't normally get .. (as I posted in another thread a short while back) ..

The EDGE is flying btw... :D

More info on dynamic tariff

Further to

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=55489

What dynamic pricing does is to see what the current capacity on the network is and then to offer discounts accordingly. The discount ranges from 10% to 90% in increments of 10%. The discount that you will receive is shown on your phone as a cell broadcast message.

The discount rate changes every hour depending on the network capacity. This is very dynamic; if you were driving around East London/Border area your discount could change as you drove through the town and then pass through different cells which have a different utilization, hence different discount options. This is active for all pre-paid subscribers from Alexandria through Grahamstown, up to Fort Beaufort through to Stutterheim and down to Kei Mouth, and everyone in between. Basically the whole of the Eastern Cape and more recently the Transkei as well.

The pilot is only available for prepaid customers (all price plans) and the discount will only be effective if you call another MTN subscriber. No discount for sms or data, only voice calls. One has to be activated via USSD to receive the discount, but the offered discount will display on any MTN phone with Cell Broadcast channel 50 active. To register for the discounts one has to dial *222*1# and wait for the sms that welcomes you. Alternatively one can dial *222# and a reply will be received with many menu options. Select option 1 which is to “register” and press send.

You can dial *222#. You will receive the following Menu:

1. Register
2. Deregister
3. Test Info
4. Discount Info
5. Help
6. Notification ON
7. Notification OFF
8. Tariff Info
You can choose option 3, 4 or 8 to get information.

If you need any more information or require help you can dial 140083 and an MTN agent will assist you with your queries. This is a free call.

Now you will receive the discounts as indicated on your phone when you call another MTN subscriber, the sub you call can be contract or prepaid. There are 4 other menu options available to assist the user, including a deregister option (number 2), for those in doubt.

There are no extra charges and you can be assured that if you phone at high discount times you will enjoy the lowest cellular tariffs available in the country (25c per minute at 90% discount) from any operator and any price plan. All calls are billed per second from the first second.

There is no peak or off-peak. The larger the discount, the cheaper the call, irrespective of the time of day. Subscribers can get really cheap calls even during the day if they are in an area of the network where there are not a lot of people calling. At 0% discount, calls are charged at R2.50.

The test is likely to run until the end of November after which subscribers will revert back to their original price plan.

This is not a promotion as such, rather a pilot to gather intelligence on user behaviour and network impact.

What if you spend an hour talking and the discount changes during the time you are busy with the call?

What if you spend an hour talking and the discount changes during the time you are busy with the call?

Currently the rate changes happen on the hour and there is no in-call notification. So a call made at 16:59 could have a new discount at 17:00. On the other hand, if you move across the network from cell to cell you stay on the discount rate of the first cell you initiated the call in.

The pilot and accompanying market surveys take note of these issues and whether it really matters to people.

With the call per second billing on this scheme you could always restart the phone call after the hour if it is a big concern.

With so many clever people around here, this should be easy :D

Is there any way to get my normal cell info back? I'm not a pre-paid customer and I'm getting the percentage thing and it's bugging me :)

Here's the reply

The percentages will stay on till the end of this pilot project in November some time.

It cannot be modified on a customer basis.

The customer can de-activate cell broadcast but obviously he won’t get the normal cell info then.

I suspected the answer would be something like that :)

No worries. Ta for the quick responses :D

Meh. Such is life.

*melodramatic pose*
