'Union buildings need new name'

They are probably afraid the word "Union" would create a misconception that it exist in this country.
 
Names such as this (the Union Buildings) mean absolutely nothing to most South Africans and are a symbol of oppression." the Afrikaans daily quoted him saying.

This is why I am losing faith in this country with artards like the youth league and jacob zuma running around.
 
I agree with him ... "The Union of South Africa" ceased to be a long time ago when the former boer republics joined together.

We are now a federal parliamentary representative democratic republic so should call the seat of govt something more suitable like the "Federal Buildings" or "Govt House" or something more apt than some relic from a bygone era.

Heck if it was left up to certain people around here we still would be flying the old S.A flag ;).
 
Call it "Pan African Parliament" (P.A.P.), gravy is implied.

I dont have a problem with a name like that but naming every building and street after some "hero" is starting to get lame.

How can it be regarded as a symbol of oppression though? AFAIK the Union of South Africa only ceased to be in 1961 when it became a republic, it was formed out of the 2 British colonies and boer republics.
 
Why change the name at all? It's part of history. If you change the name, people won't ask why it's called the "Union Buildings", and thus would not know it was because of the joining of the republics and colonies. Rewriting / Erasing of history seems to be a priority with this government.

Did non-whites have civil rights in the then Union ???.

So does that answer your question now ... why on earth do we even need to debate this in this day and age ???.

Based on Tshwane renaming "logic" would it not be fitting to rename UB as 'Andries Francois du Toit Building' in honour of original land owner?

So what is the German seat of govt called huh ???.

So by your logic they should have called it the Reichstag (it was called this since the Holy Roman Empire days until the Nazi's) and not the Bundestag like they do today for rather obvious reason.

Some parts of history should not be forgotten but not shoved down other people's throats.
