We are all living on ANIMAL FARM!

All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.... :)

It's called quotas. Universities get money (or extra money) from the government according to how many black students they have.

"Rapport reported last Sunday that Stefan Storm of Benoni and J J Baird of Germiston were refused registration at the University of Pretoria despite the fact that both gained eight distinctions in matric."

Am i the only one finding this REALLY hard to believe? The universities are trying to pull in as many top students (8 distinctions puts u at the top, easily) as they can. In a quota situation, two other students would be dropped in favour of these two. They should publish the reason given for their refusal for registration.

What worries me more about this is that the quota system has checks and balances in it that are supposed to ensure that graduates are at least competent...

The universities only get their subsidies for the student once the student attains the qualification, so effectively for the 3 or 4 years you're at varsity you're a liability until you get your degree.

I don't know how they cant accept students with 8 distinctions. Thats two extra subjects and a A in every one of them, the amount of work for that is unbelievable.

If I was those Matrics I would have lost all hope in SA right there, all that hard work and they are refused? It also doesn't seem that believable or right to me.

They will just claim there was some mistake and accept them anyway.... and no reason will ever be given why in the first place.

Unless the University of Pretoria is only accepting white students with better than eight distinctions, we must assume that other white candidates with poorer results are also being accepted over better white students.

Believe it.

So many bright South Africans leaving SA & the rest of the world welcome them with open arms.

Our loss is their gain.

This is why I have a big problem with AA in its current form. It is too cumbersome for any government on the planet to enforce fairly. As soon as a black family reach middle class they cannot possibly be considered disadvantaged anymore. Who in their right mind ever considered Tokyo Sexwale previously disadvantaged?!!? Who can still do it as things stand now?

Government should assist all the poor, not just the blacks. That would be the easiest way to help everybody. The black population is the largest and therefore would inevitably recieve the largest amount of support. Uplifting based on race is sick, twisted and wrong! The fact that nobody in government is speaking out against it is indicative of the kind of society we are living in. One where nobody speaks the truth because doing so might cost you your job and therefore your income...

1st rule when listening to anybody speaking proudly of the current regime of AA... CHECK IF THEY ARE MAKING A LIVING DOING SO!!!! If they do, then ignore them... If they don't continue ignoring them because then whoever is doing so is just plain stupid anyway...

Agreed!

True, AA, EE, BEE and BBBEE are all a huge business in SA. They have moved way past being a government initiative now and are being driven entirely by profit.

Now consider how difficult it is to change say the telecommunications policy now and how we are being held back at the expense of Telkom and their shareholders profits. It will be even more difficult to stop this new machine, even after the numbers represent the demographics correctly.
I don't think they could stop it even if they wanted to quite frankly.

I find it extremely hard to believe that these guys with 8 distinctions got refused.... no matter what race they are.... maybe they wanted to study some weird course ... or they tried to register too late.... but I think we need more facts before we jump to any conclusions and start playing the race card

Just a thought: Perhaps they applied for something medical (doctor, vet, etc) or something, where you are interviewed and can only get in because of your personality and education.

Quite right, it will be interesting to hear the other side of the story, lets hope the varsity responds.

I agree!
For Med school you have to apply in March of your matric year, you cant just end up with 8 A's and now you want to enter, it doesnt work like that.

Theres a lot of other requirements involved, social work etc etc...
But if your dad or mums a doctor its easier to get in;)

Yes it's funny that the same people who jump up and down about blacks playing the race card don't seem to notice when they do the same thing.

There are just not enough facts to form any sort of judgement in this case yet. And judging from the source the probably never will be.
