New Telkom DoBroadband offerings met with mixed feelings

classic telkom behaviour, they will never change.

here's to telkoms.

Still a pity that the prices still exclude the R99.29 copper line rental. I really wish Telkom would sell something like ADSL only, without voice.

Then again, the R7bn net profits have to come from somewhere...

(sigh)

All this, just begs the question : What did people think was going to happen?

Telkom providing a simple, cut price service, finally allowing ISP resellers to make decent profits, and putting them on even keel with it's own ISP making it bags of money, just because it's the right thing to do?

Yeah, that's what I though too... :)

PS : And I'm sure they're really scared of ICASA and them competition commission too. :)

Take them to court damit! Setup a sponser site and I will donate to the cost like I did with TAC.

Yes I agree. Stop whining about it being anticompetitive and take them to court! Then maybe the rest of South Africa will actually notice telkoms behavior, and then actually support you!

Mmm...they don't offer a 3GB cap with 384 here and in any case, Cybersmart's one price ADSL is still cheaper at R339 per month for 3 GB cap on 384k, which is cheaper than the Do Broadband Level 2 which is at R364.

Laurie Fialkov, Founder of Cybersmart , does not think that Telkom’s new products will put them at much more of a disadvantage. “In light of all the other advantages that Telkom has over ISPs, I doubt this one will have much of an impact,” said Fialkov.
I think that's where u r wrong, Laurie. Despite my hatred for Telkom, I have to say that their rip-off Do 1gb option is more attractive than other ISP offerings. IMO they are abusing their monopolistic position to offer a bundled product (i.e. rip-off ADSL access charge with 1gb of data) that will steal a lot of business from other ISPs that are not afforded the opportunity to provide the same offerings.

I will probably make use of the Do 1gb option for my international bandwidth needs and find a local only account elsewhere.

Why is Telkom so short sighted? They are going to loose billions when NeoTel comes on board. They will have to drop prices and compete on service levels to retain their customers. When that happens their costs go up and retrenchments are not an option to appease shareholders. Why, because how do you rollout infrastructure and improve service levels if you are firing people.

I would suggest that government sell all their shares, put the money in the bank and wait for the above situation to materialise. Then use the cash to buy Telkom completely and delist - the share price will be about R 5. Fix up the problems in the company without the shareholders cross-questioning your every move. Once it is running profitably again re-list the company for R 50 a share and watch your income grow.

Ok life is not as simple as that, but it is a medium risk high reward strategy.

Start a Anti-Telkom Club

Yes I agree. Stop whining about it being anticompetitive and take them to court! Then maybe the rest of South Africa will actually notice telkoms behavior, and then actually support you!

Well are we going to do something? Stand up for what we believe... *lame boring speech*

Because if you do some quick calculations: There is 19683 members on myADSL(Yes I know some are not active etc, but for arguments sake) if each and everyone gives R 50 we have:

(19683*50) = R 98, 4150.00

For a start to do something? But for that to happen me must first consider for what we want to take Telkom to court and what do we want to gain out of this? Maybe start up a trust/club/etc from the admin side etc?

Regards,

using telkom maths this is a "very" good  deal. bah@telkom
