Apple launched their Safari 3 browser for both Windows PC and Macs, but will it be able to compete effectively against the two dominating browsers, Internet Explorer and Firefox.

no. Safari is just another Mozzila clone and looks almost the same as the Mozilla browser (except more grey). I believe Firefox (which runs on Windows, Mac and *nix) still is way ahead.

IMHO Safari is and always has been a bit k@k - I have always found something else to use on my Mac, Firefox these days.

Safari is built on Webkit (which is used in the KDE browser Konqueror) not Mozilla.

But people aren't realising the true reason for Safari on Windows. At the WWDC Keynote last night Steve Jobs said that 3rd party application for the iPhone will have to be run in the browser. And the browser on the iPhone is... Safari. So basically they're releasing the SDK for iPhone. If you want to develop an app for the iPhone, and you don't have a Mac, you'll be really happy with Safari for Windows.

Not crazy about it....looks very bland and prefer Firefox anyways.

So that's another reason not to get an iPhone then...;)

To rape an old bash.org quote : "The hardest part about buying an iPhone is telling your parents that you're gay." :)

Sheesh, not a single Apple fanboy has posted yet. Guess even they know it's no match for Firefox.
Safari on the mac is completely different and surpasses firefox in many aspects - most importantly speed. A mac user is also unlikely to comment on a bad looking windows port. ;)
I though Safari was built on Netscape stuff. uh...
Nope - it's WebKit which itself evolved from Konqueror. Camino (also a really fast browser) is Mozilla.

Apple claims that Safari 3 is the "world's best browser," but with alternatives like Camino and Omniweb, many will argue that Safari isn't even the best browser for Mac OS X, let alone the best browser for Windows. The modest increase in rendering performance is hardly worth the deficiencies, and Safari's user interface simply doesn't provide the usability or flexibility of competing products. If the folks at Apple think that providing Windows users with a taste of Mac OS X through Safari is going to entice them to buy a Mac, it's going to take a better effort than the Safari 3 beta. Even if the final release is more polished and completely bug-free, it still won't be as powerful or feature-loaded as Opera or Firefox.
Safari seem to have been way overhyped.

It is a beta. And they have a button right on the toolbar to report back bugs.
