SCEE president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will no longer be available in the US after stock sells out - which he predicts will occur by the end of the month.

Reeves was speaking at an E3 event to announce the introduction of a new PS3 bundle in Europe. When asked about possible criticisms over whether SCEE should have given consumers the option to pay a lower price, as SCEA has done, he replied, "Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July."

When asked to clarify if this will mean the end of the 60GB model, Reeves answered, "In America, yes."

SCEA announced a USD 100 price cut for PlayStation 3 earlier this week. A new 80GB model will come bundled with a copy of Motorstorm and will retail for USD 599.

The full interview with Reeves is now on GamesIndustry.biz.

Kudos to Sony for having the balls to screw the consumers yet again. I wonder why do people still support these guys??!?

Ha Ha! That's hysterical. Every time Sony tries to pretend to do something for the customer the screw something else!

I guess 60GB drives are becoming a rarity these days. It's the only reason I can see them having to goto 80GB

I don't understand the 80Gb thing... Microsoft offer a 120GB and you would think they would have at least matched it..

Now Microsoft gets to walk around going "Mines bigger than yours" ;)

It's such a joke. 60gb's are extinct because it's the exact same process to manufacture a 80gb - Single sided single platter.

It really makes me wonder my MS went with the 20Gb, they must be getting them for nothing.

I see.

Do you really need more than 20Gb? Unless you are downloading movies I can't see you needing more.

Arcade titles have a limit of 150Mb, so that's a whole pile of games before you start running out of space. Granted the demos can be over a gig each but they are demos and are intended to be deleted...

I think M$ has it right with the 20Gb and 120Gb models. The core however was a mistake and the cost of the 120Gb harddrive is stupid.

I've got 4Gb free  I get a lot of the demo's

Gav, my point is just that the technical requirements to build a 20Gb drive are the same as an 80Gb drive. An HDD can be no simpler that single platter, single side, single head, which is in all likelyhood the exact same configuration for all these drives.

Do you have access to wholesale drive prices? You'll see, there's very little difference in price for low end drives.

I can agree with that completely. I am just saying the general populace don't need it.

What they should have done is give the Core a 20Gb drive and the Premium a 100Gb drive from the beginning... Same price as well...

I will never understand why they made a SKU without a HDD...

idiots..

Anyway have you seen the latest news? The Vice president of marketing has been running his mouth off about the 360

http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/peter-dille-xbox-360-not-sustainable/

How it is not a 10 year product and that it doesn't even work.

Must suck getting your ass handed to you by a company with a broken product I guess

heh heh. That's unfortunately the biggest thing I dislike about Sony - their arrogance and they way they keep playing the man not the ball. By comparison most of the MS team are outright gentlemen. This interview with Peter Moore is a good example:
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=79577

Eurogamer: So it's not bribery, in Jack Tretton's phrase.

Peter Moore: That was a strange comment, you know. I'm not going to get involved in that, but saying they've never had a business relationship with a publisher to make content for the PlayStation platform...

Eurogamer: Do you think it's foolish not to invest money to make content exclusively for a platform if that's what their policy now is?

Peter Moore: I don't know if it's their policy now. I certainly - I find it a stretch to believe that business arrangements, marketing money, development money - this is what our industry does, we work with our partners and we figure out how we can make a game sell better. We do it all the time, and we're not shy about saying we'll sit down with publishers and ask how can we invest in making your game better on our platform. We did it for example with Guitar Hero, and it worked out very well - and there was a business arrangement involved there, and I'm not shy about saying that - but Jack made a statement and I'm just not going to get lured into a battle with Jack. He knows how to run his business.

It's all just hype and defence, Sony are scared to death, no technology product, let alone a console can last 10 years, history proves that, it's just marketing speak to make R6600 seem more palatable. Thanks, I'd rather spend R3500 now and another R3500 in 5 years for the latest and greatest.

ok, i'm eating my foot and boy it's big. Sony, the ps3 is good, and reliable, but who ever is running marketing/ coming up with the price cut idea's must either come from grade 5. OR possibly just trying to kill the playstation brand. Seriously now, i'm sick and tired of this.

Sony: look $100 discount
Consumers: Wow, thats actually pretty cool, i think i'm gonna get one
Sony: SIKE! We only giving you a price cut till july, and thats only America!
Consumer: well screw this, xbox will break, Hey, it's a wii :)

Maybe they secretly work for Microsoft and Nintendo :)

"We got this clarified statement from Karraker, who said "The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.""

So at least the discount sale is more than two weeks.

I hosed myself again when I read this:

We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers

Of course they do! That's the difference between the 5.5 million shipped and 3.5 million sold ;) They've got 2 million units gather dust.

I see the europeans are going loony over this. Sony sure knows how to win friend and influence people. I think Microsoft must be crying right now. The PS3 would be dead and buried if it weren't for the abysmal failure rate of the 360.
