SAT3 under the spotlight

Some sources are however not questioning SAT3 capacity, but are rather asking whether Telkom may be intentionally limiting local capacity to serve its own agenda.

This may be very true. As far as I am told, Telkom need to ensure that they have enough local bandwidth for the new Triple Play(IPTV) on the IPC network. If they allow uncapped usage on the IPC they might not be able to launch a proper working version of IPTV to the public. Which in turn means that the new Telkom Media company will be shut down before it even starts.

a lot of no comment can be read into that story - concerning that they cannot deny the VSNL/Neotel issue

imagine there must be some pretty intensive lobbying going down

So we really, really need to push ICASA to enforce the "no local cap" regulations :)

Telkom however denies these rumors, pointing out that SAT-3 and SAFE were recently upgraded to 120 Gb/s and 90 Gb/s respectively and that further upgrades are technically viable.

“... The current capacity growth rate depicts that a next upgrade of these cables will be required during 2008/9,” Telkom said.

So, they upgraded this year, and they're going to have to upgrade again next year. After that, the cable can't be boosted any further and they probably won't get another cable out until 2009 (earliest). And that's only if data growth meets their expectations (which it never has before. They've always been caught short.)

But they say they don't have capacity problems...
