Neotel sets high-speed Internet launch date of September

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if CDMA is a cellular technology and Neotel has been allocated spectrum by ICASA then there is essentially nothing stopping them from entering the cellular market if they wanted to and competing with Vodacom, MTN, et al?
 
Hi Fergus

Dominic may be the best guy to comment, but I think their license prohibits them from allowing true mobility. I asked Pandey about this previously, and he said that they will most likely put measures in place to prevent true mobility. Having said that, maybe the new ECA allows them to provide mobile services…

For now I will be happy to see ANY commercial residential services from them :D

In the beginning I got all exited when reading about NeoTel, these days it's just more about nothing. Promises, more promises and a lot of talk about true broadband, bla bla bla

Watch this space, we not going to get anything competitive on pricing from them. I doubt it very much. Reading between the lines I sense they are setting the stage and making exuses why they "can't" undercut Telkom. I hope I am mistaken...

BTW!

We need prices capping speed!! If telkom is R199 Neotel has got a lot to do to get our money!

So i searched for this on google. And I found this website, which when converting their offerings to Rands, has some pretty good reading inside...

Power On & On 3-512.... 512 Kbps .... 1760 total per month in Indian Rupee .... 3 months contract ....

There global parter-ma-jig offers 512kbps at R308 for uncapped internet. Thats a 3 month contract...

So, hopefully Neotel gonna get some good influence :)

personally i think neotel is being blocked at every turn and they are not the reason for delay's

im giving them til jan 2008 and then giving up

well if they offered something along the line of R600.00 8mpbs uncapped i would snap it up :)

or something like 400 bucks for a 4 meg uncapped solution :)

maybe something like 1 meg line uncapped for 250 would be awesome

i think they will rip us just like telkom does in the bandwidth department and i dont think we will ever see true cheap uncapped

come to south africa and make millions by screwing the ppl with a large barge pole

As for usage I don't mind being capped but please make it resonable atleast 5GB's +

i think we getting ahead of our selfs here, i seriously doubt that they will offering uncapped solutions for dirt cheap prices.
 
Never mind the cost of bandwidth. I mean, that's a SAT3/Telkom problem at this stage that is out of the hands of Neotel for now.

One place I can see an immediate drop in cost is rental charges. This is an area where Neotel CAN compete immediately on.

Put pressure on Telkom with its ridiculous analogue plus ADSL line rental charges. From the article they will be delivering "high-speed internet services bundled with voice and SMS capabilities". That to me sounds like the kind of downward pressure on rental charges I would like to see happen for one. They have no reason to continue the "two charges for one copper cable" mentality that Hellkom so espouses.

Not having to pay that useless R111-odd analogue rental would be a major win for me as a consumer and a sure sign that there is indeed competition coming and not just more hot air.

After that, they can go and put more downward pressure on retail costs and more upward pressure on speeds, please. :)

There is one major problem: Neo will undercut Telkom by the smallest margin it can manage, 'cause they want to attract subscribers without killing the cash-cow.
