HDTV for 2010 World Cup

It's like they're just putting on a show for the tourists.

"Hey, look at us! We can do HD!" meanwhile no one in South Africa actually gets it.

*sigh*

He did however point out that it is possible that local viewers may be able to get HDTV coverage through satellite services, but that this issue is still under discussion. By 2010 there should also be various new pay-TV operators in South Africa which may bring HDTV to local consumers.

So, the rich people get it and the rest of us have to watch SD.

Precisely, but thats always the way its been in this country AND theres no guarantee ppl like No-Choice have the satellite bandwidth to stream HD

this is like producing a fine wine in south africa, but being unable to sample it.

Thats just typical! I suppose I'm not surprised - its like our best produce is only available for export. Think I'll have an extended holiday in the UK and watch our HDTV there! :)

Does dstv have the capacity to stream HD?

For the time being I'd even be happy if they just broadcast in widescreen.

I don't have Nulltichoice, but I remember seeing an ad a while back which said that they were "working on it". Reading between the lines, it seemed to say "we don't care if you dropped R20 000 on a fancy TV, we'll get it when our competitors do" :)

You must realise that it is not just a switch that they can turn and then there is HD. It is quite a big infrastructure change that needs to happen. And with everything going digital in the next year, we are at least moving closer.

At this stage SABC owns 3 (maybe more by now) HD OB vans, but all this means is that they can send HD signals overseas.

I was at a conference earlier this year where SABC had a test HD broadcast running, which I was hoping would show me that we are getting there, but unfortunately it showed me that we are further away than I thought.

At a minimum, we should be getting our broadcasts in 720p, or even 1080i, and in widescreen. 'Nuff said.

It's no use MultiChoice bringing out future decoders with DVI / HDMI outputs when there's no HD content.

Iirc

A year or 2 ago when they stated that the 2010 world cup would broadcast in HD they said they would also provide feeds for older television sets(Can't find article at the present).

I would of though they would at least make it accessible to *ALL* South Africans...not merely those willing to pony up 12K+(at the present moment) for HD TV. But then I guess we seem to be more eager to appease FIFA in this whole matter ala Green Point Hole...err Stadium.

Is any country in the world getting all their broadcasts at a minimum of 720p?

Nope...

That would be huge news if it was the case.
As for No-Choice having the capacity to stream HD, given the codec they use, I don't think so. But I do know the stream SOME stuff (usually sports) in Widescreen

Considering many of their broadcasts are of inferior quality to the 350mb downloads available perhaps they should consider getting rid of some of those ever so important channels - say perhaps the high 70's and the entire 90's range and improve things elsewhere.

I definately agree with you on that... anything after 71 in the 70's range.. and anything from 90 onwards should just be axed in my opinion. Couple of other channels that could be done without in my opinion.. aka 23...

Agreed - scrap the odd number supersports channels and give me widescreen - I'm tired of everyone having a J-Lo sized butt!

heh....
well no.. one or two of the odd number supersport channels has Formula 1 and motorsport stuff on it, and rugby... its the just the excess of soccer that drives me mad.
