We all know this.
I say to Lingham, host overseas and have fail over access to the Internet.
These are solutions that are currently available. Hosting overseas would cost less, albeit fail over access would be expensive.
At least then his business can function irrespective.
No one who can make a difference about the state of Internet in South Africa cares at this stage. Thus do not have the intention to do anything about it.
All our ranting is like us sitting in a cave and ranting and raving amongst each other. And those that have a say and that can make a difference to the Internet access state of affairs consider us in the cave merely as a nuisance to them. But they'll not make the required change in attitude.
Look at Telkom's attitude at the current hearings. Look at how they consider competition. Look at Icasa. Look at the DoC. Look at the cable system saga. Look at the conflict of interest that exists amongst the telecoms players. It's all a mess.
Who is doing anything to address the heart of the problem?--the attitude of the people in whose hands the responsibility of the industry resides.
I suspect no one. And is it possible to get them to alter their attitude? I suspect not. They don't care about us sitting and muttering in the cave.

We actually do host overseas. I'm saying that our local lines went down and our developers could not access our international servers! That's how bad it was!

Maybe we should try to get people who work for the government addicted to the internet.

Internet access - fail over a must
Twice already when deploying to the UAT hosting server I was/went down. I decided then and there, before I go live I'll have fail over Internet access. That'll prevent someone else's shoddy service to interfere with or to be in charge of my well being.
Good to hear. For a different reason I decided from the outset to host overseas; and never regretted it. I'm still developing and partly in UAT.
Twice already when deploying to the UAT hosting server I was/went down. I decided then and there, before I go live I'll have fail over Internet access. That'll prevent someone else's shoddy service to interfere with or to be in charge of my well being.
Telkoms slow and shoddy internet connections slows down the development of every internet business. I was with out internet a while ago, (And the only reason telkom could find "Sorry sir we're working on it") I couldn't check invoices, payments, new sign ups, anything really... It was a crippling experiance.
Soon though i will join a local wisp, purely for redundancy, so if my line goes down i can still work!

somewhat of a fan of Vinny Lingham, i could be wrong but the bulk of his work, clients and income is from overseas clients. Unfortunately SA is lagging way behind the rest to compete.
Eg. Synthasite, his latest project would, IMO, only work on a good stable broadband connection.
We too host overseas, sure it saves costs but when your physical internet line is down, you'r pretty much screwed.
Apart from Telkom, Eskom is another good reason to host overseas. Look at the Hetzner incident, sure the customers got compensated but at the end of the day their sites were down. Being in online-sales, every minute your site is down is a potential loss of income. Hosting overseas has its disadvantages but with the current SA telecoms state, i'd rather go that route then host local.

No, no, no and no! For crying out loud! IT'S GOVERNMENT THAT IS TO BLAME IN THE FIRST PLACE! Not Telkom and not anybody else, BUT GOVERNMENT! They need to get the feck out of fiddling with the market and let human ingenuity and competitiveness take over! THAT'S THE PROBLEM. Simple. Period.

There's a typo in the article; it should read "Synthasite" instead of "Synthosite".
