No iPhone bite

wtf?

He says the hacked handsets not only have their warranties voided but will also be “bricked” the moment they are connected to Apple’s iTunes software.

Eh?

I thought that you can only (maybe) brick it when you update the firmware on your hacked iPhone, but even then you can "un-brick" it.

People will import it anyway, no amount of "scare tactics" will stop that. I'm interested in what will happen a year from now, when the (non removable) battery needs to be replaced....

When AT&T's 2 year contract runs out, do Apple unlock for you so that u can use a different network?
I wonder - ATT does have a 5 year exclusivity on the iPhone.

Besides, I know the iPhone is revolutionary (:p) but who wants a 2 year old phone anyway. :D

'we cannot support them.' -i reckon anyone who buys an iPhone and hacks it (or buys a 'grey' import is well aware of that.

I think the iPhone is lame, its nice looking and fun for a bit, but other phones have the same +way more functionality.

I was due for an upgrade last month and am due for one in February. I was going to get one for the nice on-board storage for music but since Apple decided to stuff us, let it be their loss.

Yeah but whats the point? the biggest one has 8GB of music storage right?
The phone doesnt have 3G even, no GPS.
If you were to get the 8GB edition of the N95 then you would have the storage plus 3G/HSDPA and GPS. Seems like a no brainer to me.

If it does get bricked due to internet activity, somebody will just unbrick it again and prevent future bricking via that method. Then they'll find another way to brick it....the cycle continues. Who's gonna win?

...at that stage its more like 4-5 years outdated, the current feature set is 'like OMG so 2 years ago'

Battery is no hassle - if you have imported, hacked and used yr iPhone then you are probably the kind of dude who can handle replacing the battery with one of those kits you can get for the current iPods.

My personal interest in iPhone is the interface (since seeing Jeff Hahn on youtube I have been dying to futz with something multitouch) and the fact that I currently carry a phone (1 of 3) and a 1st gen nano. I have never had a good time playing music with a phone, there always seems to be some tiny detail that ruins it for me so maybe iPhone fixes that.

One thing I cannot take is that iPhone does not have video calling, its almost sinful and its directly attributable to the fact the El Jobso went with AT&T (no 3g) a move which in itself raises many questions when you look at the history of the two companies.
Just think of the possibilities: with a screen that size you could video conference (split screen into six for instance).

Either way seeing how the price has dropped over the last few months (the price of importing that is), post xmas prices will most likely be impossible to pass up so Steve gets more of my money next year. :o

er...

Steve-o will get my money as soon as he drops the price (again) and stops dragging his feet with the releasing the SDK.

The iPhone is like the iPod...give it a while and the fad will go away..*sighs*..who pays R6000 for a phone anyway? You can buy a laptop, even a pc or xbox360 plus a little something something on the side.....no thank you...the iPhone is a gimmick that will pass....surely?

Yep, it's gonna pass 'cuz its got such credible competition like the HTC touch and others, just like the 100 million unit ipod phase is going to pass.:D

Yes it is F.U.D.

Core Group, the SA distributor of Apple products, has warned consumers not to buy grey-market iPhone imports

They wouldn't want people to buy their product without being locked into a contract with a certain provider or being able to use 3rd party (useful) applications. They want to be able to dictate everything to their customers aswell as anyone wanting to develop software for the iPhone, and demand royalties from anyone hoping to make software for their iPhone.

All this while others offer prizes to developers who make good mobile applications.

Why doesn't apple just use a shotgun to shoot itself in the foot and get it over with, I don't know how they manage to keep customers.
