SNR and Line Attenuation

I have been waiting in the hope that I may have an ADSL option with Neotel... maybe just a little longer? In the mean time I have been stuck with my Telkom 4 Port Marconi stock standard piece of... well, I'm sure you all know.

My question: will buying another ADSL router (wifi or otherwise), possibly LinkSys or Belkin, result in a lower line attenuation and higher SNR?

At the moment the line attenuation is around 58 dB, which is barely good enough for 1Mbps...
 
A router may only change the value by a marginal amount, dont expect it to improve the quality of your line though. If you are getting these values now, chances are you will get those values with another router.... your SNR might improve slightly but nothing to write home about.

Hmmmm... k. But I still do find the current router a piece o' &%$#. I have to reset it every so often to get it up to speed again. Tx.
 
you are only going to lower 1-2 attenuation values at best with a more modern router.

SNR is another story - that might go up 3-5 or down 3-5.

netgear 834gt and telkom 5102g have the same SNR line specs. the netgear 834g is much lower in snr.
 
what line specs you have currently?

they sorta run hand in hand :

if your attenuation reaches 60+ - you are almost certain to have trouble.

telkom doesn't even OK an installation if attenuation is found to be above 60.

for SNR - anything above 6 is acceptable to them - but that doesn't leave ANY margin for error..

for example - the dlink 300T,telkom 5102g - when they sniff sub 6 SNR they do a forced resync ...where as the netgear 834G and GT can go as low as 3 before it does a resync


Downstream Attenuation

0-42 dB - 2Mbps (strictly adhered to wef Aug 2005)
43-60 dB - 1Mbps
> 60 dB - 512kbps

SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio).

An upgrade in speed often causes the SNR to decrease by up to 5 dB. The higher your SNR figure then the better your line quality and therefore a higher chance of getting faster speeds.
 
Is there any way to check these values (SNR & Line Attenuation) aside from what your router reports? I have a Netgear DG632 and it doesn't display those values. Not that I can see anyway.

Currently on my downstream I have approximately 57-59 dB line attenuation and SNR of approximately 13 dB. I just worry because occasionally my latency shoots up and then drops off (eventually).

google a program called routerstats - see if you can get it going.

should help alot!...also - what do u have - 384/512/1024?

exactly what number values are we talking about?

if you are on 1meg - and the above figures are shown , we can recommend an upgrade to 2meg/3meg or even upto4meg :)
 
MrNutz, what are the minimum values required for a 4mbps sync? my attenuation and snr values are 44 and 19 respectively and i'm currently only syncing at 1mbps :(

you can surely phone 375 375 and ask them to up you from 1024 to 4096 - but keep in mind if the service become a bit unsteady to phone again and ask for say down to 2048

19 SNR on 1024 says about you should be at 13 SNR at 2048 and 9 SNR at 3072 ..

4096 might get close to 6 - just watch it..

the line attenuation doesn't increase ALOT when going faster - about 2 max - your 44 for 1024 is good!
 
To add a few cents here:

I've got a Billion Bipac 5102 as well as a Netgear DG834GT router, and the Netgear gets a faster sync speed (4096 vs 2500 - 3200 on the Billion)

I basically never sync at full spead on the Billion...

My current line stats on the Netgear:

ADSL Link Downstream
Connection Speed:384 kbps
Line Attenuation:31.5 db
Noise Margin:13.0 db

ADSL Link Upstream
Connection Speed: 384 kbps
Line Attenuation: 31.5 db
Noise Margin: 13.0 db

thanks MrNuts :) i just phoned them and i'm now happily syncing at 4096mbps with attenuation and snr of 45 and 13 :)

Just the 384 - but I've been thinking of upgrading and these stats worry me...
 
I'm on a 4MB line and my modem shows the following:

Local Line Atten.: 43.0 dB
Remote Line Atten.: 25.0 dB
Local SNR Margin: 12.0 dB
Remote SNR Margin: 12.0 dB

Which is the downstream and upstream?

I also see a table with the following info:

Counters Local
Fast
CRC: 18067

Failures Local
SEF: 6292
LOS: 6105
LCD: 6197

Can anyone tell me if this is good or bad? Reason I'm asking is because I get terrible lag in World of Warcraft and even worse lag spikes.
