Hi All

Just sorted my upgrade (done very rapidly by telkom). Speedtests show max 430kbs down, 360kbs up. Router (Mega) shows 4M/380k as it should.

Could the knowing please suggest a list of things I can try to remedy the situation, and possibly a way of checking the line quality...

All std lines have filters, and I have a spare ADSL modem...

TIA
Ian

u sure you got your little b's and big B's all right?

Me not think he has all the b's quite right...hehe - 4096kbps/8 is around 512KB, most of us on 4MB has seen Max 3400/8 which comes to +/- 425KB

Proff

I think he has it right, his download is about 53 kB/s.

Search for other posts of people complaining about the same thing.

You'll only see 400 kB/s downloads if you use a download manager that is capable of doing a multi-threaded download. Somehow international downloads are getting limited to +/- 50 kB/s per thread, so an international speedtest is not the best way of measuring your line speed.

I concur that international speed tests show that your line is a lot slower than its maximum potential (synch speed). I also find surfing hovers around 50kB/sec (~400kbps). As qinglung points out, you need a download manager to get the higher speeds.

What are your noise margin and attentuation figures? (see manual for your router / modem on how to check this)

Lastly, run some local speed tests for a more conclusive answer as to whether your line is running 4M or not:

http://www.sentech.co.za/speedtest/display_speed.php (I get about 2M using this test [I'm on the SAIX backbone])

http://www.iburst.co.za/default.aspx?link=sales_speedtest (Requires Java; I get about 3.45M)

http://www.speedtest.net/ (I usually get 3.5M+ using this, because it picks a mirror close to you)

Report back after you run the above tests :)

By the way, your "360kbs" up is bloody fantastic... A good 40kbps faster than I ever get! Strange, then, that your downstream is slow!

Yip, I have exactly the same issue ;)

Thanks for the replies...

Just to confirm, I get 430kbs, or 52kBs, on all speedtests, local and intl. Same thing with dl's from news.axxess, max for all threads totals ~52kBs.

I'll check out the noise margin and attn numbers, and pots back.

Cheers
Ian

With me, my line synces at 4096/384 but i dont get above 50k per sec even when im using multithreaded newsleecher downloading off international servers. this sux.

And it seems no one has any new theories as to why this is....

try restarting the router. could also be crosstalk. happened to me before.

The other posters having problems with 50kB/sec limits - have you guys done the local speed tests? Also limited to 50kB/sec like the OP?

teraside, that all looks good to me (except that Gamco one - but Gamco is messed up, because I always get 300-400kbps on it, too).

I think there are two issues here:

1. The OP is limited to 50kB/sec, even on those local speed tests that you have posted results (in excess of 1M speeds) from

2. The rest of us on 4M lines, you and I included, find that surfing doesn't work faster than 50kB/sec (averaged; I find bursts hit 150-300kB/sec occasionally). You say this is a Telkom issue - and I agree with you... But I think it's an ISP/backbone issue not a physical line issue that can be resolved... Maybe like some kind of throttling. Make sense?

Point 2 is pretty pathetic and I've said it before, but it's very disappointing for those that are expecting day-to-day web surfing wonders while waiting for their lines to synch at 4M!!! Even YouTube videos only come in at 30-50kB/sec :(

Yip, that makes sense fz1. I'm bookmarking this thread. I don't have money right now, but I'm going to buy some prepaid unshaped bandwidth from Webafrica and test. Then I'll know if it's throttling/shaping or my line ;)

I hate to burst your bubble of hope, teraside, but it's no better on Web Africa prepaid (shaped or otherwise) - I've been using a combination of shaped (90%) and unshaped (10%) for the past 2 weeks, and this problem is evident.

I will see if I can run some speed tests to compare the two later tonight.

Sounds good fz1 ;) I thought that it was because of shaping.

Jeez, if it is because of shaping, we will all need to throw a collective fit of rage (of epic proportions), because the very definition of shaping is that it gives very low priority to non-HTTP/FTP/etc. protocols - which obviously means that surfing (HTTP) will be given the highest priority, in turn implying it should be running at full speed!!!

Then again, it is Telkom. I'll test later tonight :)
