DStv gets 24-hour e.tv news

I have always wanted to understand the business model for 24 hour news. How are the likes of Al-Jazerra and CNN, BBC, SKY, EURONEWS etc making money from news.

Ok I have seen countless Airline advertisements on CNN and I guess with their global reach maybe they do have the numbers there.

ETV with 1.2 million people , hardly a big market i think, besides, they will be competing with aljazerra and skyy.

I do not understand the tv world much so could someone explain this ?

That figure is for DSTV African coverage. If you've watched SABCAfrica, you would probably realise what kind of channel it could be. In French even?

This is great. Been waiting ages for a 24-hour local news channel. Also prefer E.TV news over SABC news.

Best of luck to e-spat with its 24hr news channel on DSTV, unfortunately I doubt I will remember to watch it just like the other international & local news channels that I also don't watch :o.

This is good, hopefully they'll have plenty of news Doc's like Al-Jazeera or CNN.

The fact that we're getting a 24 hour news channel is great news.

At least in the event of a nuclear/natural/other disaster in SA, we might get the news on tv in real time instead of later this evening. It sometimes seems like international viewers gets major sa news faster than the average (informed) south african does.

Maybe they realised they can't cram all the crime and corruption into their current time slot.

I doubt that I'll be watching it. They should rather make the summit channel 24/7.

Besides, it takes a massive budget to run a 24/7 news channel with quality news. Even Sky & BBC are rerunning the same stories multiple times every day.

You neglected to specifically mention Tsunamis which is the reason given by Stalin-Mafole from the Dementia of Communistications, for protecting Telkodemonopolies:

So the one thing we will not hear about on the 24hr e-spat news channel, is Tsunamis - bcos Stalin-Mafole doesn't control shares in e-spat...

Wot!
On the DSTV platform !!

SO FRIKKING MUCH FOR BE FREE WITH E !!!!

Why can't they put it on the free-to-air "public boquet" section?

In their home countries these channels carry direct advertising. They do however allow regional ads in most slots with a system where the carrier (in this case DSTV) can get the editorial feed to hear when ad breaks are coming up and play them in. They are pretty organized from what I hear.

DSTV / Multichoice pays to carry CNN with terms on ads AFAIK.

:)

You would be surprised how many business people and corporate environments run news channels 24/7 in their offices and reception areas. I am addicted to it. I would watch about 60% news on a normal viewing cycle.:D

I think it's good to have a 24hour local news channel. Look at SABC Africa. What a load of crap. SABC cant even do the evening news (SABC2) and "morning live" properly without glitches, wrong tapes, audio not syncing and many other indicators of incompetence let alone sabc africa. if the etv channel is of good quality i will watch it. especially with the release of dvb-h soon.

I also agree with what e.sat said, i don't think there is place in the south african tv market for so many pay tv operators. so it might just be a better idea for them to go into the content supplying market.
