Keeping with tradition

me too. But it could take off in big way - for the lower end of the market.

Only problem with cellphone banking is that I need to print proof of payments

cellphone works for small or once off transactions, other than that i also go for the pc internet.

I'll buy airtime and do the odd money transfer with Wizzit - but pay my electricity and other stuff over the counter as I want a proof of payment.

You never know what'll happen.

I just object to the illusory claims that 95% of South Africans have a mobile phone. Brendan Peacock must live online and believe all the PR from the big operator

Where's your proof that the quoted figure is incorrect?

I seriously doubt 95% of South African's have cell phones. Before Vodacom and MTN seemed to count the number of prepaid and contract sim cards out there as there measurement. But recently, Vodacom reduced their numbers by dropping those prepaid accounts who didn't spend more than a few rands in a few months. But that's still not enough, because how many sim cards does the average person have?

I have at least 4. The average person has at least 2. And my teenager cousins use different sim cards like crazy and so do their friends. They have contracts but they also have prepaid sims and chuck them after they've finished. I would say they've used at least 8 to 10 in the last 2 years. How many times has the cellphone companies counted them?

If I were to guess, I'd say no more than 70% of South Africans had cellphones.

The airtime for goods idea is old news in other parts of the world.

A better question to ask is how many people do you know that do not own cellphones?
