That's the truth alright. If you do nothing that involves multiple connections then don't go more than a 384 line.

Seriously, the 4 meg line is like a brand new Red Ferrari, its an awesome car but in this case it has the same engine as the 384 skedonk and is a fraction of the price. However as far as bragging rights go, the Ferrari will look nice and you can tell all your friends but try show them how fast it goes and they will laugh at you and tell you how much money they are saving for the same thing.

But anyway 393 kbps is slightly faster than 384 kbps so I guess the Ferrari wins on technicalities :)
 
International single threaded downloads, maybe. Use a multithreaded download manager with 4MB/s ADSL and you will easily get international download speeds in excess of 3200kbps.

At R50/Gb versus R200/Gb, you'll actually be able to do some speed on ADSL without having to take out a second mortgage.

And what cheap/free local bandwidth options are there for HSPDA? Nada.

Yeah, I definitely use my full line speed for downloads but downloads aren't everything, its the general experience that I'm talking about.

Internet radio stations that can't even hold their buffers. A step up would be online video content (such as Youtube) that either takes forever to play or skips all the time depending on the buffer properties (i.e. some sites don't allow you to pause and wait for the video to buffer).

Look there are loads of example to go on about here but what I'm trying to say is that 4MB/s is great, Shaping is not!

My experience has been 40 to 50 ms for local and around 400ms to the states (both being round trips obviously) These are using SAIX shaped

Has anyone got a latency figure for the hsdpa services. I'm using the 4Mbps ADSL and the latency international latency is around 220m/s using IS's optic connection
 
It is well known that both MTN and Vodacom provision adequate international bandwidth to ensure high quality service while Telkom has often come under fire for the poor international performance for their ADSL offerings.

As there is only one undersea cable how do MTN and Vodacom make provisions for better international performance? What do they do differently to Telkom?
 
these figures are flawed. there's no way that you can tell me that a person with 4096kbps line is only getting 393kbps. that's absolute rubbish. ADSL is faster than HSDPA at the moment, cos Vodacom can only accomodate 1.8Mbps at the moment. Until then, Telkom reigns supreme.

that's absolute rubbish. where do these flawed statistics come from? get your facts straight myadsl or wherever you got the info from.

Wow, HSDPA is so fast.... too bad it has a 500Mb - 1GB cap and it pretty usesless for gaming...

November has gone and were still shaped? On my 384 line I still get only 320 Kbps max and dl from saix during the day on news servers sucks big time (dailup speeds). So telkom is still not complying to ADSl regulations.
It looks like somebody has to get them before ICASA again before they do anything about it.

Why is it so difficult for people to get the simple 'ol b/B concept?
 
The report echos my experiences as well:

Telkom 4M ADSL is much slower than VC HSDPA on the international link.

VC HSDPA shows intenational web pages usually much faster than Telkom super ADSL inspite of the difference in advertised speeds.

Thanks for telling me that MTN is limiting uploads to a rediculous 64k. Yesterday I advised a client loyal to MTN to get the E220 type modem contracts. I already called him and he was shocked that the company he is loyal to offers such a rediculous service.
 
I recently upgraded to the 4MB and I must say, I feel the same way as most people. The only time you really notice a difference is if you have 10 windows open all opening different sites or you using a download accelerator.

I also installed World of Warcraft this morning and needed to update from the first version to the newest version, let me say the downloads were flatlining at around 440kb/s. I found that pretty impressive, 700mb in around 20 mins was nice.

But if you have no download accelerator it is absolutely useless. Anyknow know why it is like this? Not sure if it is like this for local too, or just international?

i use flashget. there are some others that are pretty good as well.
