Telkom to launch ‘free local ADSL bandwidth promotion’

I use about 3.5 GB of international and 7-8 GB local a month.
So, the only way I can use this oh-so-fantastic offer is to buy a Teklom 1GB account (for 80 bucks), and then use that account for my local-only access.
Doff.
Why don't they sell local-only accounts?

Sigh, its still cheaper to stay on my openweb account. what's the use if you still first have to use up all you int bw and then switch to local :(:(:(

Good news for TelkomInternet subscribers is that the company’s ‘collective threshold’ or soft capping policies will still apply.

“The customer basically still has two thresholds. The ‘Service Threshold’ which is the purchased package, 1/2/3/4 GB. When this threshold is exceeded the customer is placed into a ‘Collective Threshold’,” said Telkom’s Group Executive for Corporate Communication, Lulu Letlape.

It is interesting to note that the collective threshold on a 3GB account has suddenly reduced to 3GB. So one must conclude that the free bandwidth also contributes to the collective.

It's also interesting to note than this was applied mid day on the 31st of December.

Hmm, so a 1GB account is also now part of the service threshold package. It wasn't before...

I see this as a good/progressive move by Telkom. They initially indicated that they will cap international on exactly the monthly usage limit and charge for additional local bandwidth afterwards, so this is a significant positive move away from it.

While we would like to see unlimited local BW, we asked Telkom a while back for at least 30 GB after reaching your limit which is what they did for 3 GB subscribers. I for one commend Telkom for this.

Only Telkom can manage to give you less whilst running a promotion than before running the promotion.

I have been using a 1GB TelkomSA account for the last two months. Local bandwidth has been completely uncapped and I have used in excess of 30GB on the account in both months, and at the same time I could still use the 1GB international traffic right at the end if I wanted to.

Now my local bandwidth will drop to 10GB whilst I pay the same amount. Lovely! Back to Openweb I go.

I don't like the idea of automatically topping up local bandwidth at R25/GB when a person's allocation has been used up. I'd rather be hard capped. It's not always possible to accurately monitor internet usage on my PC. I use multiple OS's and multiple ISP's so it's difficult to know if I've done more than my 30GB local on my Telkom account.

Yep I agree with orin76, I want the account to be hardcapped when I exceed the usage, no matter what it is. Not to be charged at R25.55 (extortion) per GB.

I'd also rather be hard capped.

It's like your cellphone bill, you can easily be charged for things you didn't do and the only way to avoid it is to be like a auditor with a mission!

I wish we could specify, "hard cap me" please! cause I would do that rather.

Wonder what contention ratio Openweb offers, probably something like a 100:1 .... There is unfortunately no FREE Lunch

Pah! I will still sit with my wireless uncapped than switch to telkom....

Telkom said that the promotion will last until customer behaviour patterns are determined, and that this information will then be used to compile cost effective and usable packages.

Translated: We're not exactly sure what you fsckers want after all this time, but we're willing to let this run until a) we figure out how the new system works and, b) how to roger you for more money in a semi-official way.

I have had a 2Gb/20Gb local account which I started this month and so far I have this email from them (after day 2):

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems their definition of "local" means the following domains:
e-mail service for both sending and receiving e-mail.

the four main banking sites, namely
http://www.absadirect.co.za
https://www.encrypt.standardbank.co.za
https://www.fnb.co.za
https://netbank.nedsecure.co.za

I assume this because I have been unable to access the news servers for a couple of days now.

Just to add to the confusion, I am fascinated by the fact that I just posted in this thread, I can see it in my profile under my subscriptions but when I access this thread, my message is not here...
Very odd...
Wonder if I am a victim of corrupt Telkom caching... anyone want to guess?

I have to agree with Librarian. As I mentioned above, all that is happening is that the collective bandwidth is being reallocated, reallocated in such a way as to remove the international portion of it.

It is quite amazing that Telkom can spend so much time to make these creative changes to their services where Telkom wins and client loses, rather than providing the kind of service which would win the pocket book of their clients going forward.

Regarding the per MB charge which automatically kicks in, I also find this unacceptable. Telkom does not provide a reliable way of determining usage, so it's impossible to properly manage this usage. Too often are Telkom's usage stats either not available or totally at odds with SAIX usage stats, or, indeed, the emailed stats are totally at odds with the web site, when this latter service is available and properly operational.

If Telkom wants to offer a per MB charge then this MUST be done via an opt in basis with the default being a hard cap. If I am going to pay for top up then I would rather pay someone who gives me full value for my money rather than pay someone who is going to steal the unused bandwidth ath the end of the month.

At every opportunity Telkom gets it wrong. One waits with bated breath for the opposition's announcement.

Hot air. I cancelled my TI account and moved to Oepenweb last week.

My "collective threshold" too became exactly what my package was. And I was hardcapped. for the last 3 months at just over 3GB.

Bye bye telskum.
