Hi all,

We are looking at buying a 2018 BMW x2 for the missus with around 44 000.00 KM on the clock from BMW. The motor plan expires in two months, and they have quoted us just under 50k to extend it for a further 2 years. The vehicle has had one owner and a full franchise history. We ran through the system and there has been nothing done aside for the general servicing of the car.

The missus is concerned about something happening mechanically, but my thoughts are with such low mileage its very unlikely. She does around 10 000 km a year and will likely keep the car for 5 years. Should we extend the plan for maybe 1 year instead, go with the 2 years or go with an extended warranty? Is there something else we can look at? We do plan to continue servicing it at BMW.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

You're taking purchasing advice from someone unqualified to recommend an airfryer. They troll anything that isn't a 2l diesel from BMW.
having been though multiple Cars, the ones i've had the most issues with was the 2L bmw petrol engines, our dealer even now steer's people away from them

He is absolutely a fandboy. but he is also right, the Diesel motors are by far the best. A friend works as a senior tech at bmw, he drives a 3.0D and said he will not own a petrol derivative of a bmw.

I still want an M2 comp though. so dont listen to me

Isn't there a way to extend the factory warranty instead? It's cheaper and covers the expensive stuff...

Often its the full plan. the quote they got sounds on point for BMW. we paid VW 30k to extend a 5yr MP to 8yrs

If it's the full plan or nothing, then honestly that's balls. Both Toyota and Renault allowed me to extend the factory warranty even though they also provide maintenance plans. The factory warranty covers all factory components except wear and tear items.

Toyota did an entire engine replacement on my 86 (which would have cost R150k) when the block went, as well as the ignition coils a few times. Renault replaced a headlight (which would have cost R10k) when the DRL went. The only thing I've ever had to pay for on my own was discs and pads...

That sounds expensive. Are you sure it's only extending it with time and not mileage as well?
Can you not extend year for year?

Will need to check but I think it's both time and km. I think it's like 25k for one year. We might check if we can do time only because the missus doesn't drive more than +- 10k a year.

They are effectively charging you R50k for 2 services IF nothing goes wrong. You have to make the choice. Ask them to quote you on the next 2 services for that vehicle then you can decide.

I am driving a Cayenne that is out of warranty and plan. My second one out of warranty and plan. It's a chance you take.

Having a motor plan on a new vehicle is nice and all but it's not the end of the world if you don't have one. Says the guy whose M2 blew a boost pipe the day he sold it on the way to the buyer.

Nah price is right for time only, matches up what they quoted me also & that was time only with no additional km's , same year but X4

Did you end up taking an extension?

No - i decided i'm keeping it & won't extend motorplan but i've had it for 3 years & are comfortable enough taking the risk.
.
If you insure thru them chase the insurance company on reduced km's if that's what your missus does, i also do low km's & its quite a bit lower premium.
