Groupon are having a deal on a jump-start kit.

It looks cool - very small/portable unlike those large battery packs which I'm used to.

Question for the experts: can you see any downside to the product or the deal?

No alternator ?

Not sure that I understand what you're saying.

Are you asking if- or saying that there is- no alternator in the power bank?

If the latter, are there alternators in the other battery pack/jump-starter kits? I assume not..

In the car......

This would be for those times when internal electrical issues/dead/dying battery prevent starting. These are much less of a ball-ache to use than waiting for roadside assistance.

I've seen these advertised. But still trying to find out what batteries they have. Is it lithium ion?

Here's another "mini jump starter" from Oz that can be used to start engines as well as power laptops and phones: http://minijumpstarter.com/

I've been looking locally for something like this.

Looks like Li-ion (1000 charge cycles, 6 month shelf-life per cycle).

That other one is quite a bit more expensive without much (or any?) added value that I can see..

I agree. Lithium ion isn't cheap, which makes me wonder whether the cheaper one isn't nickel metal hydride or even nickel cadmium. Wish they would say. Makes me suspicious that they don't.

I was stuck at a mall last week with a dead battery. Another shopper hopped out with one of these (I think I may have laughed when I saw it), and to my amazement it worked. Now I'm looking to get one.

Powervault user here.

Very happy with the unit. Have jump started diesel trucks , Bakkies, petrol cars and SUVs without skipping a beat over the last year

Which ever one you get , make sure you cycle the batteries regularly.

I drain and recharge them every 3 months . They will serve you well

It all depends on the car’s size. I had one. If the car’s churn is heavy (it will fry it). It happend to me in lockdown. My audi melted the starter pack

I bought another one for my smaller car. Nice device/gadget to have for smaller cars in emergencies

I have a one of the below, has been useful to jump start 2 vehicles 5 times and once a generator.

3 of the jumps starts were where the vehicle was alone and I would have needed to call someone to come with a vehicle if it was just me with jumper cables.

I got myself one of these about a year back…

It comes in very handy, providing sufficient lighting (LED) during loadshedding, while charging two devices at a time.

We went camping in December last year, and I charged my iPhone and iPad for the entire two weeks without having to recharge the unit. Also helped some fellow campers jump start their vehicles once or twice. In addition to this, I used the LED light around the braai/potjie at night.

I now consider this a must-have in my vehicle

I've got one, used it a few times last year to jump my Clio when out and about, actually need to charge it again and pack it back, last used it to try jump an older Corsa but it's battery was just to far gone

If you're referring to the Takealot price, that's definitely not what I paid for it.

A friend of mine asked to bring in a bulk shipment from the USA using my importers permit for use in his business. I looked at the specs, and decided I needed to add an additional one for myself

In that case, remember to share next time
