Afrihost airmobile (legacy sim) battery draining

Can someone explain how to diagnose this being problem?

Just tell me if this is right:
1. Put phone on mobile network (switch off WiFi)
2. Get your IP from
3. Use a different connection to ping that IP
4. If publicly accessible then ping will respond (I'm surprised android does that but okay...)
5. Try airplane mode on /off
6. Repeat above
7. If still an issue DM support?

My current status
- Definitely on legacy APN (can see I'm using afrihost data on the app)
- ip address says
Whoops!
You are **not on the Afrihost Data **Network
Your IP Address is:100.76.29.15
- that address is PUBLIC. Pings from my pc do respond

Will dm now now.

Yes, I am draining. As long as I have the afrihost APN selected on the legacy SIM, then I am draining. I have tried multiple "scenarios". Set my non-legacy SIM as my data SIM in phone all while being connected to WiFi - yip, but if the legacy SIM is turned on and the afrihost APN selected, it drains. Only way is to change to another APN on that SIM, or deactivate it.

The thing that is confusing me is that I've not once been able to successfully ping my IP without getting a "Request timed out" response. Yet, I am noticing the drain and even brought it up. Is there something else afoot, something more?

Hi. Thank you.

I have responded to the DM.

Thanks @Afrigirl - will see how it goes now. Sorry for giving you a headache.
BTW, I do have 2 Afrihost numbers - the legacy (MTN SIM), and my number that I ported from Telkom - in case it causes any confusion.

Yes, I am looking at the prepaid legacy package.

@Afrigirl can you setup an automated job to this?
Daily or hourly, not sure how often the legacy IPs get reallocated.

Also got a public ip just now :197.79.36.165

I don't know what is going on. Again, I lost 21% in 4 hours last night (while on legacy SIM APN).
Now I've configured it not to use that APN, and also switched to the non-legacy SIM. Now I'm paranoid about my non-legacy one also as my battery seems like it is still draining fast - whereas it didn't on this SIM. I must test again more. It seems like all I'm doing these days is switching APNs and leaving my phone to test. I don't want to have to port out, but this is bad for my phone's battery in the long run. I will update with my test results later.

Yeah, it's like I'm fine for a while, then I can see my battery going down.
Same here, after @Afrigirl said we should reboot after the fix, everything was working perfectly but this morning I woke up to <10% battery and checked my battery drain graph and for sure battery drain was back.
Somehow I got a public IP again.

I rebooted again this morning to get a new IP and looks like its okay for now.

I am definitely worried now about my non-legacy SIM also., it's been almost two hours and I am down from 32% - 18%. Something is cooking. I will restart my phone and then put it back on charge again. Only thing I can think of is now I have data on my non-legacy number - previously it had no data.

My battery usage seems normal since last charge

I'm sitting on a cgnat as well.

Just did a traceroute to it and just get no response

Will ask her on monday. Its random I can toggle airplane mode sometime I get public sometime not

This may seem like overkill, but I don't know what to do here. Keeping track throughout the day and not using my phone; I've done hourly measurements under different scenarious. Now 4% an hour may not sound like a lot, but if you sleep for 8 hours, that is 32% battery down while phone is idle. So, yes, it is a lot. Would have done longer sessions, but it would just take longer.
For background, I am running dual-SIM in my phone, one MTN SIM (Legacy AirMobile) and one eSIM (AirMobile):

Take this with a grain of salt, but the only scenario where battery usage was normal on both occasions was when I was on the Legacy SIM only with an MTN APN active 17:30 and 20:30).
