Afrihost airmobile (legacy sim) battery draining

Also happening on my secondary phone which has an Airmobile sim, saw the battery drained significantly overnight.
Checked the IP and it was indeed a public IP on my Airmobile sim.

I am having the same issue. On a new S25FE with New Airmobile SIM - IP address in 197.79 range and unable to ping. However battery drains on standby - losing 60% in 24 hours

*Have changed APN to MTN to see if that helps.

I have created a web page to see if you have a public IP address or not. You can view it here if you are interested :

On my Airmobile sim

I’m on MTN and the checker also says I have a public ip, I wonder if it’s a malware site??, 🤔
@Smiggles are you on a public or private IP?

It says my fibre connection is on NAT but I'm on a public IP so think it's not 100% working 😂

I also cannot do a traceroute to my Air Mobile SIM

Actually very neat and well designed with ease of use in mind. Informative as well without too much unnecessary details

Well done.

Nice!!
Yup. Got public IP on AH legacy.

Can someone please explain this battery drain issue to me. I have 2 esims and 1 physical sim with airmobile, afrihost

Why would apn settings influence battery life?

It's not the APN settings themselves, that is just the configuration used to access the internet. The issue here is to do with the IP address being assigned. Basically, the IP is not behind any firewall and your phone never sleeps because all traffic that would be blocked is now hitting your device. On the legacy (MTN) SIM (which was the initial cause for concern when this thread was created), you need to create an APN for Afrihost. You can easily change back to the MTN APN, and use the SIM as a normal MTN SIM. Instead of disabling the SIM altogether, you can switch to the MTN APN and save battery. But the issue seems now to be affecting non-legacy SIMs too..

Would this happen even if you switch of mobile data?

I have been experiencing the same issue on multiple SIM cards/devices since last week. All of my devices have AirMobile SIM cards while using the ws.air.mvno APN (NOT legacy MTN SIM cards with the afrihost APN.)

I noticed the same behaviour that has been discussed in this thread regarding public vs CGNAT IP addresses.

When experiencing this issue, I typically receive IP addresses in the 197.79.x.x range which I am able to ping. Strangely enough, there have been times during the past week where the battery drain returns to normal. During these times, when I checked my IP address, it is in the 102.x.x.x range and cannot be pinged.

Currently, 2 out of 3 of my AirMobile SIM cards have IP addresses in the 197.79.x.x. range (Experiencing high battery drain), while the other SIM card has an IP address in the 102.x.x.x range (Not experiencing high battery drain at the moment.)

I have restarted the devices and turned airplane mode off/on throughout the past week, however it does not seem to make a difference.

Hi.

Yes, Airmobile MVNO is now affected. It used to be strictly on CGNAT IPs. For the numbers affected, I have enabled NAT.
The team is checking if they can prioritise NAT IP allocation for mobile services.
