Homemade Pizza

I’m a Kitchenaid man, but if you don’t have a mixer yet then some of you may be interested in this as an option.

I've been making pizzas in my normal oven for years. Now looking to upgrade to a gas pizza oven. At the moment I cannot afford the fancy ones like the Ooni & Gozneys etc. Is there a nice entry level one to start off with that anyone can recommend?

Have a look for a second hand Milex gas oven.

Alternatively Checkers' Bushbaby one looked pretty decent when I saw it.

EDIT - if you enjoy pizza these things will pay for themselves before you know it.

Hi, I’m looking for some honest reviews on those CADAC and ALVA gas ovens from anyone who currently owns or has owned one in the past.

How do they compare to a standard oven, braai ovens, or even OONI-style pizza ovens? I’m a bit hesitant because they seem a bit limited—only back-lit, and I’m not sure they get hot enough underneath. But it’s tough to find solid reviews or videos online.

If you’ve used one, I’d really appreciate your insights!
Thanks in advance!

hey @CLG ! Just popping up to find out if you ever purchased one of the above mentioned ovens? :)

I've had the Milex (as did bwana before he got a Gozney) since December 2023.

I am a keen home cook, particularly obsessed with Italian food and therefore pizza. Particularly obsessed with pizza, so I've made many different styles, not only Italian (New York, Chicago, Detroit etc.).

If you are wanting to make Neapolitan or New York style pizza, a home oven won't cut it.

You could get near the ball park if you have a really good oven that can reach 280 deg. C, and if you preheat it with a proper baking steel and use a thicker than usual pizza stone, but you will not achieve the same results as with a proper pizza oven that is capable of heating to 300 deg. C in ~15 min, or 400-500 deg. C if needed, using gas.

The Milex is far from perfect, and I will upgrade to a Gozney at some point, but for now it serves it's purpose.

Just be aware that with the Milex and similar styled ovens, you need to be almost constantly rotating the pizza during the cook. After launching, the area closest to the burners at the back will burn the pizza if you do not rotate the pizza after ~10-15 seconds, depending on the heat.

It will cook a pizza in ~2 minutes and return to cooking temp very shortly after.

Thanks @Vades - for now I just want to up my game a little from the normal oven so yeah seems the way to go!

After I've sorted out the garage doors, balcony ceiling, living room windows and adding solar panels - this is next.

By then my diet will be over. God I look forward to pizza again!

Another failure to peel but edible.

Italian sausage, bacon, pepperoni, olives, and pickled onions. Checkers sells bocconcini mozzarella so I added those alongside the usual low moisture mozzarella.

Just get a big air fryer, I've never had better homemade pizza.
My air fryer isn't that big so I just cut the pizza in half and do half at a time, now that I think of it there are two layers so maybe I can try do both halves at once.

Instead of cutting it in half why don't you just make a smaller pizza?

That's the only size pizza bases I can get, I only "make" the toppings.
In that case I'm not sure an air fryer is the best recommendation to be making if someone wants to make their own pizza from scratch.

Apart from being too small they cook pizza to perfection in my experience
