Openserve launches Internet service provider

What exactly counts as a "low income area"? Technically my area could be considered "low income" as there is not one USD billionaire living here as far as I know. Why do they discriminate against the middle class this way?

There is the option of 4G if 10 Mbps is sufficient for your needs. 50 Mbps fibre is no longer the value for money proposition it used to be.
The same way the middle class cannot get their free basic allocation of Water and electricity because they are not classed as an "indigent Household" all ANC socialist ideals.

It isnt discrimination, it is density. They roll out fiber per meter and it is about the number of people that they cover per meter. It is cheap to provide services to people living 10m apart each vs people living 100m apart on average.

Where can I see OS Web Connect coverage map?

Is Chatsworth a high density area?
Is Bluff a high density area?

Baffles me but I assume it means where there is more low- lower middle class homes than a high concentration of high value homes?

I have noticed in numerous towns in WC, they are busy removing the copper cables from their telephone poles. Maybe they'll use it for fibre in these " low income areas" for a quick and cheap roll out.. Especially when those towns already have Herotel, they will have to compete on price, which it seems they do.

The density argument don't really make sense, as density only really matters with wifi networks. These poles can only serve 4 homes each, big yard or not.

Density absolutely makes a massive difference. The cost of an FNO is not Mbps/Gpbs -- it is mostly in meters of fiber put in the ground, or strung up in the air. People live closer together, less meters of fiber to put in the ground on average per house.

Why do they only get 10-40mb? Are they discriminating?

I could live with that if it was the case but Vumatel alleges they classify by income. But then they don't even get that right classifying us as high income rollout where most people here are low middle class and the houses are rather close together. The density argument also doesn't make sense and has never worked in any country. I did the research at the time and we are on average more dense by a factor of 4 than countries like the US yet we are about 4 times as expensive so no direct correlation and this is more about greed and trying to pacify the government. Racism is alive and well in SA and has never been more institutionalised than now.

Japan is pretty dense:

Japan's internet is vastly ahead of us, Public Wi-Fi fastest was 300-500mbps slowest I've seen was 50mbps at the hotel but 4G and 5G is insane, constant 100-150mb on 4G even on a fast moving train and even 5G passing gigabit on a train all on a uncapped 5G plan (I barely used Wi-Fi when I was there) think it is around R500-R800 for a unlimited plan

Is their technology superior do ours?

I would rather live in a low density area and pay R200 more for fibre.

Is it a coincidence that the Japanese love baseball and that crime rates are very low? Going to baseball games while using uncapped 5G is a dream of mine. There is no substitute for average IQ levels. Low IQ people are addicted to soccer.

Japan doesn't even have bins to throw away rubbish and yet there is no rubbish on the streets anywhere.

The Japanese do love soccer though...... Thousands in the streets celebrating their wins in the world cup. Although they are that good that when the traffic light turned green for pedestrians they ran into the streets and celebrated as soon as it was about to turn red they cleared the road in a matter of seconds
