No they wouldn't. It would look like they lost giving their all instead of sitting back and waiting to Argentina to score.

They had been the better team up until that point. Close, but they had momentum. Had they just kept at it, there was an equally good chance of Argentina becoming more desperate as time ran out and then opening themselves up.
It was 100% a tactical blunder. Only an idiot sits back and gives Messi 30 minutes to ping balls into the box.
There wasn't even an effort to hit on the counter, simply hoof the ball away. They had someone like Marcus Rashord on the bench who is ideally suited to counter-attacking football, so if you are going to sit back then at least have an outlet. Both of their CBs were on yellow cards as well, so even more of a reason to have a pacy player run at them while they are pushing for a goal.
