Fifa World Cup 2026

Some countries there i never even knew existed

World cup increasing from 32 to 48 team really has made some pointless matches.
+16 extra teams and +40 extra matches for a total of 104 matches compared to the previous world cup. In my view that really makes zero sense and waters down the whole tournament. People will seriously get fatigued watching 104 matches over 39 days. The extra matches mean so many records for goals scored and golden boot record goals will happen.

Africa gets 9 slots. 4 extra slots over the previous world cup. At least it means South African qualifies for the first time since 2002. (2010 they hosted meaning they did not have to qualify)

I have never heard of the countries of Curucao or Cabo verde before. You could easily get 10-0 scoresheets when they play tier 1 nations.

I didn't know that had happened, it is pointless, there's no need for all those no-name brand teams to make the World Cup, they should be eliminated well before that stage so the whole world doesn't need to watch them getting slaughtered.

It’s not like in past World Cups it was a closely fought thing between the majority of teams, the big football countries have always annihilated the lesser teams.

South Africans get visa free travel to Mexico so at least fans don't have to apply for US visas as they will be based in Mexico
They do? Is this a special concession for the world cup?

Edit: unless perhaps there is a mix up with visa free and free visa, as there's no charge for a tourist visa if you're South African.

Pretty tough group for Bafana, no heavy weights but Mexico at home, then SK will be tough. Ireland might be in the group too, should they qualify. Group B, D and G look pretty weak.

It cheapens qualification as you don't know if teams are any good who enter the tournament.
e.g.
New Zealand had to top a group of Tahiti, Vanatu and Samoa to qualify.
Australia had to top a group of Bangladesh, Palestine and Lebanon to qualify. The latter two still being bombed regularly.
Haiti who qualified is such a mess they never played any matches in Haiti to qualify and their coach has never set foot in the country.
Curucao who qualified has a population of 185K people. Cabo verde who qualified has a population of 500K. Most people never knew they existed and will have hardly any fans in the stadium nor people who support them as they can't locate them on a map or even say which continent they belong to.

Ugh just read it does cost but it is reasonable compared to the US visa cost
51 USD (R950) visa cost for Mexico vs 185USD (R3.1K) visa cost for US.

You also don't need Mexican visa if you have a Schengen, UK, Canada, Japan or US visa)

Never felt more confident about Bafana going past the initial group stage. And that with a team mostly made up of the players from our local league.

Broos is busy with something special, following the 96 AFCON victory we never really had something special with Bafana other than the 3rd place finish in AFCON 23 (and we were pretty decent in that tournament )with regards to a world cup.

Just qualifying out of the group stage at a world cup (which we have never done I think) is already a bonus and an achievement imho.

You know it's going to be shite when the crooks at FIFA are making up crap to give Trump a peace prize

Why pay at all.

Starmer has a good point there. FIFA are just profiting off of people who aren't genuine lovers of the game. It is why the took the world cup to the likes of Qatar. Real fans are being left out in pursuit of the mighty dollar.

it is happening all over.

In the UK, Premier League ticket prices are skyrocketing, especially among the ''Big 6'', with domestic fans complaining that they are increasingly being priced out in favour of tourists.

Formula 1 is also becoming out of reach for the average fan, notably at all these new street circuits that are popping up.

I believe tickets to a Bok game are also quite eye-watering.
