No it most definitely is not.

A 20-year-old diesel car emits carbon continuously during operation.

According to lifecycle assessment data from organizations like the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), a new EV "breaks even" and becomes cleaner than an internal combustion engine car within 1 to 3 years of driving, depending on how green the local electricity grid is.

Your car's tailpipe emissions are incredibly high—roughly 150g to 200g of \(CO_{2}\) per kilometer. Over 100,000 kilometers, it will dump 15 to 20 metric tons of new \(CO_{2}\) directly into the atmosphere.

Building the battery for the EV is carbon-intensive, creating roughly 5 to 10 metric tons of initial \(CO_{2}\) upfront.

However, its driving emissions are zero at the tailpipe. Even when charged with average produced electricity, its power-grid emissions average only 30g to 50g of \(CO_{2}\) per kilometer.

The massive, ongoing accumulation of tailpipe \(CO_{2}\) and toxic soot heavily outweighs the one-time environmental cost of manufacturing a clean, modern electric vehicle.

While this is true, SAs electricity has double the emissions than USA per kWh, so it will be closer to 7 years normally. Although I think a 20 year old car’s emissions will be higher than what we benchmark with now. 12l/100km is quite bad these days.

And of course if you can charge it from your solar it is another thing.

society at large has accepted loads of really bad “science” over the years as if it is 100% infallible truth - just look at the whole Covid debacle most recently. The “science” of cholesterol. The entire “low fat food” movement etc. Hell, some people even believe that science proves that veganism is a healthier choice for people and the environment.

If all of this nonsense was at one or other time in recent history been accepted as infallible truth - why is it so impossible for you to fathom that the climate crisis “science” might also be flawed

Also, you might totally lose your mind at this - Monday to Friday I drive my 20-year-old skedonk, but on the weekends I like to drive a 50-year-old skedonk that burns almost as much oil as it does fuel - especially when I drive it hard - and it leaks oil. The horror. Just imagine how many polar bears I am killing.

Sell the car after five years then when it still has resale value. My car is over 20 years old and it's literally worth less than a donkey. I can still drive to Cape Town and back in it but that doesn't mean that I enjoy the experience. I'm never making this mistake again.

Yet another excellent reason to buy those 1Mi + diesel SUVS. Even when they are 20 years old, they are still a pleasure to drive from JHB to Cape Town and back.

I didn't say that million rand SUV's should be banned but only that many consumers are stupid. I would say you have zero taste if you buy a million rand SUV as those things are hideous. The Dolphin Surf is a pleasure to behold with its design and I love watching one go by.

People who buy million rand SUV's do not spend their money on statues or paintings and their idea of "culture" is the latest superhero movie, a megachurch, Springbok rugby and a braai.

I think the outrage regarding dieselgate had little to do with the actual emissions themselves. It was about the fact that the tossers at VW intentionally lied and screwed the test results. If they cannot be trusted on something as paltry as emission results, what can they be trusted on?

My partner drives a Chinese plugin hybrid. It’s a brilliant vehicle that we charge off the solar system at home. Daily operating costs for town driving are almost zero (obviously excluding maintenance). But the vehicle can still drive +1000km without a recharge or having to refuel. The performance is extraordinary. For me, it’s the best of both worlds.

BTW, I still drive a Toyota diesel skedonk and I have absolutely no plans to get rid of it.

You do realize that most of these China cars warrantees are not transfereable?
