Hi all,

I'm hoping someone here (or an MTN rep, if there's one on the forum) can help with an issue that MTN support and in-store staff haven't been able to fix.

Background:
Prepaid number ported from Vodacom to MTN.
Location: Western Cape.
Phone: iPhone 15 Pro.

The problem:
After a phone restart, or turning airplane mode on and off, the SIM takes a very long time to connect to the MTN network.
Once it connects, it always defaults to 3G and never goes to 4G or 5G.
My other MTN SIMs at the same location get 5G with full signal, so coverage isn't the issue.

What I've tried:
Contacted MTN customer support.
Visited an MTN store, where staff couldn't resolve it.
Moved the SIM to a Honor X9d, and the exact same problem happens there, so it's not the iPhone.

My suspicion:
Something didn't provision properly on my number's profile after the port (4G/5G/VoLTE not enabled on the HLR/HSS), or the SIM itself isn't 5G-capable.

Questions:
Has anyone had this after porting, and what fixed it?
Is there an MTN rep or escalation contact who can check my number's network profile? I can share the number privately.

Thanks in advance.

I've had two MTN sims that stopped connecting to 4G (phones not 5G capable), but these sims were both roughly 10 years old. Sim swops sorted both out. Maybe the new sim is fault?

I'm thinking the same. MTN in-store wanted to charge me R150 just for doing a sim swop. Which I believe I could just do myself calling into their support number. I'll try the sim swop and see if that fixes the issue.

I sim swopped two sims last week. One was contract, was charged R150. The other was prepaid, was charged R5. How do you figure that? They afraid if you're prepaid you just buy a new sim with another network? On contract, well you're stuck with them, I guess.

That is really shady but totally expected from these blood suckers
