I agree with gmza about the misinformation that abounds, especially the statement made by ADSL-VOIP-Dealer, a new member to this forum.

According to http://www.vox.co.za/FAQs.aspx the cost of calling a Vox number from the Telkom network is is R1.07 per minute.

This is reiterated by the following statement on the "Vox Mahala Free Dial-Up" wiki page:

"Calls Charged by Telkom @ ZAR1.07 incl VAT per/min. Telkom are responsible for this call charge. Vox Telecom has no vested interest in Telkom SA."

By the way, slightly off the topic: Let the reader beware, Vox Mahala is NOT free! Not at all. For truly free dial-up (and ADSL) access, you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal than what was offered earlier in 2008 by the tiny Cape-based firm Lando (www.landonet.net), and I salute them for that. They gave 3 hours per month of free dial-up access and 250MB per month of free ADSL access. You got charged ONLY IF you exceeded these caps!

Best deal?

I am a South African living (temporarily) in Australia. I have an SIP handset. I would like to set up a number (087 is fine) by which people in SA can call me at reasonable rates from Telkom & cellphones. What is currently the best deal?

Ok. Here is the Exact Rundown.

Vox telecoms has done just that. As a JSE listed telecommunications company with a R2.5 billion value, Vox now offers South Africans the cheapest phone calls on the market. "You must have your propaganda dealer notes in front of you, Ill get a copy from my gardener, to check it out to be sure heeee heeee "

Not only that, Vox pays you up to 40c per minute for all incoming phone calls
PUKE!
The cost to rent your very own wireless, Vox handset (which plugs into your telkom line) is only R49 per month, which covers insurance and depreciation.
THE DEALER MANUAL AGAIN! Section 4/ 3.2 TOP TIP "dont forget to dazzle your clients by throwing in the word "deprecation" it works every time AND earns respect."There is also an excellent business opportunity for anyone wishing to become a dealer. YE YOU ARE LIVING PROOF: NO QUALIFICATIONS,TACT OR IQ REQUIRED, (own car essential)
For more info and precise call rates see www.087numbers.co.za

This is an awesome product. Contact me on 079 302 6292 for more info. ARE YOU INSANE?? I WORK LONG HOURS.......HOW ABOUT TOMORROW MORNING AT 3AM IS THAT GOOD FOR YOU??

Have a great day - South Africa.

No, here is the exact rundown........

 your kind make me puke, you are pathetic. Get yourself a marketing budget and stay off this forum. You even disgrace "freeloaders". You are a disgrace to the Telecoms industry. Go back to the hole you crawled out.
Vox must be out of their mind having you as a dealer, I would fire your ass but not before I first open a law suite restraining you......... PS: and Dont start me up again regarding the ethics of others getting charged high rates to call your number, while you pocket 40c. Its a disgraceful business model. You suck. You remind me of an encyclopedia sales rep. from the 70's. "never mind the Dog, knock on my door at your own risk."
Now go set fire to your own hair for entertainment (and ours) or bath with a hair dryer, but stop blowing smoke up your own ass on this forum you cheap dingbat.

Puttybag - Where I come from there is nothing wrong with being a Capitalist, In order for Vox to have any chance of beating the competition, so they need an edge, when you call your office today or your home and the mobile operators charge you R 2 per minute, think how much better you would feel if you were getting 90c of that back, I dotn work for Vox, but I sure see a way of making money and geeting my own back. Unless you want to live in a comunist enviroment where we all get paid the same and all get charged the same.

SO YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME. VOX OR THE LIKE (BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY OTHERS) JUST FACILITATE IT. SO SAVINGS IN THAT MANNER ONLY WORKS IF YOU ARE PHONING YOUR OWN NUMBER. DONT ASK THE REST OF US TO PHONE IT. I BET YOU AVOID PHONING AN 087 NUMBER FROM YOUR TELKOM LINE dotn work for Vox, but I sure see a way of making money (so do they when you call someone else's 087) and geeting my own back."AND PISSING OFF PENSIONERS.
OK YOU WIN, LETS ALL HAND OUT 087 NUMBERS,"WE STEAL ON INCOMMING" AND "BLEED WHEN PHONING THEM"???? ONLY IN AFRICA. NO RATHER WE SHOULD GET ICASA TO SORT THIS CR*P OUT.
Unless you want to live in a comunist enviroment where we all get paid the same and all get charged the same. we are nearly there, WE are all getting ripped off the same, just under a different name.PEOPLE THAT PHONE 087 NUMBERS LOOSE, UNLESS YOU PHONE YOUR OWN NUMBER.

Sorry about the "caps" my keyboard is playing up. ;)

PuttyBag, you have a point, by so does Vox, ICASA will do nothing, they have helped facilitate the ripping of people for years, Vox now gives you the chance to be on the receiving side.

Puttybag, what are you trYiNg to Say?

Im not trying to say anything, I think Ive actually said it. Its only my opinion around this subject and Im open to change, if anyone can convince me, (thats what makes a forum interesting)

What are you trying to say, by asking me what Im trying to say, when I think its clear that Ive said what I wanted to say, (if you know what Im saying)

Icasa may do nothing but then are we as the public, complaining properly ??

Your quote:
"Vox now gives you the chance to be on the receiving side"
Not true, if you are forced to phone an 087 number and you only have a telkom line, then you get a chance on the "punch drunk side" and pay for someone elses rebates.........you get ripped off. So if you are forced to make calls to 087 numbers.......you loose. My point is it need not be that way.

Telfree charges you a monthly subscription fee for the 087* number whereas some other providers such as MWEB provides you with a 087* number free of charge - you only pay for the calls you make...

hey just remember that some pabx s block the 087 prefix and then people get pissed off with you because they dont believe your number is legite.

Usually you can manipulate the 087 number which gets passed to the PABX; or if you have a VoIP device connected to your PABX on the Trunk (CO) side then the calls will usually just ring on the switch board.

Most PBXs are programmed to identify a string of numbers...

If you block all numbers starting with 08 then you block calls to all 0860 0861 and 0800 numbers as well... instead, most PBXs are programmed to block 082 083 084 0862 0865 0866 0867 088 071 072 073 074 077 079 as these are the current networks that business complain cost them money... soon 087 will be blocked as well... but I am telling my customers not to block 087 but to rather join the band wagon...

I want to know though... what is the interconnect arrangement between VoIP providers?

In that case if you have a reputable VoIP Gateway then you can still manipulate the dialed number; usualy you will use a 087* number to reach your other branch as this will be an on-net (free) call; thus you can have the end user dial 3087* and the VoIP gateway can strip the first few digits. The Quintum gateway can do this.

The interconnect agreement between VoIP providers are usually an agreements between themselves; I doubt if there has been a standard (pricing; config; etc) created for this.

are the rep for quintum? i see all your posts go about quintum?

nothing wrong with believing in your products, share the good forget the bad!
