I had a look, prices aren't bad what is the quality like? Is voip still free cause it didn't mention that from wat I could see,

The 087 number I am hoping is a solution as I stay in Primrose and we have a Telkom line for like a week in a month and then most of the time it's so noisy that it's unusable. (Yes Iburst is my BROADBAND - can I say broadband).

If anyone knows more or other 087 service providers Please POST.
 
087 what ? lol. Yes 087 numbers are up and running and no matter how many people you got to there is one company at the top that has the interconnect licence so everyone is a reseller of theirs. But becareful... there are pro's and conns of 087 numbers. Yes everyone hates telkom and wants to move but unless the whole world changes to 087 people will still be using normal telkom lines and the cost to dial your 087 becomes very expensive. Go read forums of international 087 that currently have people stamping there feet and the cost to dial them and demanding companies getting normal lines to phone them on. From Telkom to any 087 is around R1.60 to call... but to second operator it is half that price. Do you know what codec the 087 numbers are running on? I can tell you that one call for 6 minutes is 2 meg of bandwidth. Start adding that up for voice calls and you will see your data account will increase higher than any telkom bill. Then we look at the protocol that is used SIP. So all the companies out there that currently are utilizing voip and have gateways in place, which i must add cannot register with more than one gateway or provider does not have the functionality to switch from 087 provider one to numbers you may have from 087 provider 2 .. which the ideal thing would be for companies to have a number from each provider allocated 087 number ranges... restriction restrictions... but there is a way around this... but companies need to do their homework and please be careful and think with the next sweep they need to plan their network and infrastructure properly to allow them to benefit from the technology that is going to be available .. infrastructure upgrade cost can be kept to a minimum... Help anyone here?
 
Voice and Voip rates

Did some quick sums for a 10 minute telephone call during Standard time and Call more time, added them up, and compared with average for Voip providers with interconnects. Also compared against Telkom's Conventional calls.

The results are terrible !

This does not take into account costs of:
  • Bandwidth
  • Equipment needed for Voip
  • ISP margins
  • Monthly rentals
  • Only pure interconnect costs shown.
As usual the larger ISP's are taking huge profits. And a long distance Telkom to Telkom call still costs 69% of any Voip provider.

Correct me if I am wrong here !

Well, I had a look at your quick calculations, and what you worked out there is what it would cost Telkom clients to use their Telkom phones to dial Voip numbers. You did not work out what it costs the VoIP client to dial to a Telkom number. So allow me to compare Telkom to Us on a 10 minute call.

Telkom us
Local Call (JHB) - R 3. 80 R 3.80
National R 6.18 R 5. 49
International Various Average 70% saving
Cellular R 18.86 R 15.60

So, we are cheaper than Telkom, and based on your statements about other expenses, we keep it as low as possible. Our equipment is low cost, you will anyway be paying for a internet connection, etc, so for us, this is a suitable solution. VoIP In for use in SA is still to expensive

I see all the calculations nice but what ever one seems to forget is the bandwidth cost must also be added in. Now Telkom for R120 a year give you a phone line, with a free basic phone and includes FREE incoming Calls. Why pay R29 or R49 per month. If you want free calls form PC to PC then just use skype or buddycall all free. Come on guys you make money from your 087 number every time a call is made. Free Rental. I will sign up. :D

i use Telfree now, but there are still some problems in the connection.
People who call me get an error.

I am looking for a provider who gives me a Durban or Capetown number.
I am from Europe and have allready the other providers but I am looking for a non-087 number or at least a 087 number which works fine.

The 087 number is a number that is licensed under the value added network agreement between the South African People and ICASA.

In English, this means that we as South Africans, can start out own phone networks, using the 087 dialing code for our numbers.

Telkom to 087 - 0.94c per minute
GSM to 087 - 2.02 - 2.80. Which is cost of an offnet call i.e. Vodacom to MTN/CellC. Difference in price is dependant on the package you are calling from.

Bear in mind one thing - If your 087 number provider does NOT have FULL (in & outbound calling) interconnect agreements with the primary telco providers (Telkom, MTN, Vodacom, CellC, VoxTelecom, IS, Verizon & Neotel) you are ONLY going to be able to make outbound calls. Inbound 087 is only available to Service Providers who are recognised by the primary Telcos.
 
The rate from Telkom depends on the particular 087 number being called. You've quoted the specific rate for calling from Telkom to a Vox Telecom 087 number.

As you can see, it varies from around 65c/min to around R1.07/min.

Telkom calculate their ex-VAT charge as: R0.44 plus wholesale termination rate for the particular network. eg. In the case of Vox, Vox charge Telkom 50c/min to terminate calls, so Telkom charge R0.44+R0.50 = R0.94, which, when you add VAT on, is R1.07.
 
Im not sure on what it costs to call an 087 number from a cell phone, but I know that telkom charges 57c p/m excl Vat (Or 65c p/m incl VAT).

I know this because Im a vox dealer, and use their services myself...
 
What is means is that your 087 provider doesn't have interconnects with the other SPs, i.e Telkom, MTN, Vodacom.
 
Lot's of misinformation here.

If your 087 provider doesn't have interconnects with the relevent networks, you will get a recorded message "The number you have dialled is incorrect" from the cell networks, or, if from Telkom, a congestion tone (1/4 second 400Hz tone followed by 1/4 second silence, repeated, ie. two beeps per second).

A busy tone (1/2 second 400Hz tone followed by 1/2 silence, repeated, ie. one beep per second) indicates that the remote network is signalling that the phone is busy. This could be as a result of it being on another call, or, offline.

When you get a ringing tone followed by a busy tone, this could be as a result of many different things. The most common case would be if the voip phone started ringing and the recipient pressed a reject button, rather than answering it. Another example is if the call is routed to an IP PBX which is configured to give a ringing tone, wait a few seconds, and then try contact various extensions (all of which are engaged). But the permutations are much greater than just these two examples.
