Interconnect Arrangement?

I want to know though... what is the interconnect arrangement between VoIP providers?

Essentially a physical connection between the VoIP provider and incumbents (Telkom / Vodacom / MTN / CellC & Neotel). Most VoIP providers who are recognised through ICASA have allocated 087 number ranges, only a minority have ACTUAL INTERCONNECT arrangements, which essentially closes the "true" VoIP provider loop. The simple test - If you are about to do business with a VoIP provider, ask for their 087 number, call it from the Cell networks and Telkom network, if it connects, then you have an interconnect in place!

Yes, i agree with what you say... and it's all been covered by Icasa, but what is not covered by icasa, is if I phone say from VOX to MWEB?

This is usually an agreement between the two parties involved as far as I know.

can I call other Voip providers, what does it cost me? is it free? not even my voip provider can answer this... and I have a feeling that none of the providers even thought to interconnect between each other...

Some of the VoIP ISP`s are interconnected - e.g. MWEB and VOX. I don`t think the smaller guys are all interconnected and the costs of these interconnects are NOT regulated by ICASA; thus the costs will be determined between the ISP`s themselves.

Nope. They're talking about 087 numbers in South Africa.

VoIP Numbers in the UK are also 087.
This guy thought we were talking about UK VoIP providers.

Its amazing the number of people that come to this forum from other countries, and think that its all the same.

I wonder if Vodacom knows about this?

I dont think VoIP numbers are included in your free minutes.
So, I doubt that Vodacom would care.

Vodacom is still an upcoming VoIP Provider; they should have VoIP available to the public shortly but I doubt that your current free minutes will be transferable to your VoIP account.

What they are offering is more like skype... you need a PC to use it. True VoIP provision allows you to use a SIP phone. Also, a true Telco will provide you with a telephone number that people can call you on...

FNB does provide an 087 number that people can call you on, but all of their call charges are laughable.
