Hi,

We are 3 ppl sharing an ADSL line. I want to play games while the other ppl are browsing/downloading. I told everyone to buy axxess accs, cos they are semi shaped (shaped from 6pm to 6am), but its not working. When the other dudes are browsing my ping is 1300. The router is in bridge mode, so everyone can use their own bandwidth.

Can anyone please help me, and tell me how to manage the network so I can play games while the others browse?

Things I tried:
axxess semi shaped accs - not working
QoS on router - dont know if its possible, cos we dial up

It's not going to make much difference unfortunately. When your line is being used, there is traffic flowing in both directions, adding congestion. It will take longer for your requests to go through and responses to come back, meaning that your latency will suffer as a result.

Think of it this way - when a cell tower is congested, it will take you a bit longer to initiate a call. Or when a highway is congested. Same principle.

You can't really do QoS on PPPoE sessions. You will have to set the modem to do the dialup and setup the QoS, then force everyone over that instead of bridge mode, then you will get somewhere.

I am not so sure though if the modem's QoS will do what you want.

Also depends what type of line you have if I understand it correctly. If you have a 384k and 3 different accounts , your not gonna get 384k per account, instead you will all fight. You could buy a bigger line and then subdivide it but not sure how to set it up, others have spoken about it. If you do that then you should not suffer as much latency wise due to one person hogging bandwidth.

Depending on the line speed set up a old pc as a linux router and do bandwidth limiting or traffic shaping of some sort.

I used to run an IPCop server with HTML protocol data set on lowest priority, but, when somebody browsed, it still doubled my ping in BF2.

Browsing is really problematic because the size of the packet is so large, whereas the size of a BF2 packet is tiny.

A solution like IPCop should work fine for a game like WoW though, but ... you will lose the ability to PPPOE though with individual accounts.

Perhaps consider putting the browsers onto IBurst or something instead.

I know on 4mb its possible to work like that.

I have a 4mb line, 2 gamers and one downloading at 250k. ping is around 50ms, no lag at all. maybe a 10ms spike every few minutes but thats all.
