10 Mbps Upgrades

I tried again. Call center chick said that only the 6 meg profile was available on my line. She said I need to talk to technical services tomorrow to find out why.

http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/ has all the details on what exchanges support what.

I have a 4Mbps line giving me download speeds of 3.5Mbps, .44Mbps upload and 10 ping day and night. My ISP is Telkom do3 package.
On the broadbandstats.co.za site I'm told my exchange is 10Mbps enabled. If I use the availability checker on the Telkom do broadband site it states my exchange is 4Mbps.
Why would the Telkom do3 site give the wrong information?

What number [for technical services] did she recommend that you call ?

Right....so my exchange is 10mbps-enabled. Unfortunately the ports have not yet been upgraded from 4mbps, and we're still waiting for the rollout of Metro Ethernet...

But it's a start. :)

So I phoned 10219, they said my exchange only supports 6mb. I really don't understand this statement. I though there were 2 criteria for 10mb - adsl2+ dslam, and metro ethernet. And until these two were fulfilled, 4mb was the fastest.

So now why is 6 the limit? I asked the question, they couldn't answer, and told me to dial 10210.

argh.

FYI, somerset west braeview is trialing 20/40mbs ADSL

When I call 10219 it just redirects me automatically to 10210. Kinda sucks, I still get through to the same people that tells me the same message they have been advised about "If you exchange supports 10 or 6 meg, the line upgrade will happen automagically, some time unknown in the future".

Just ask them to select the profile on your line. They did that for me, 5 minutes later I was synced at 6144.

I was upgraded to 6mbs about 2 months ago after phoning telkom. The exchange is listed as 10mb.

From what I can tell the staff in the call centre only have access to a profile screen where they have the option to set sync at 6 or 8 or 10mbs. However, it appears on certain exchanges that this has been limited to 6 only! The reasons for this could be that either they don't have enough of the required equipment at the exchange or a lack of bandwidth to support users on higher speeds, hell it could be anything with telkom.

I had requested a higher speed as my line stats can easily support 10mbs (SNR: 21 Att: 29) and just got the same response.

There is obviously a giant disconnect between call centre staff and the techies/admins who set the profiles available.

Well, i just phoned them right now. "no sir, we cannot do that for you, we do not process this, if your line syncs at 4mb, once they do their network upgrades you will automatically be upgraded.

Is your router enabled for adsl2+?

Mine synced at 4mb on 2+, until I phoned them and asked them to change the profile.

I'll check when i get home, is it usually on by Default?

I asked her about profiles but she kept repeating the same line to me.. "No sir, we do not process this". so who can i speak to? "No sir, we cant do this for you".. I DONT CARE, TELL ME WHO MUST I SPEAK TO THAT CAN.. "eish, no sir" put phone down.

My area still does not support 10mb, and I keep hearing these rumors about how they are going to be testing 40mb lines by the end of the year? ... Why cant they get stable 10megs going for everyone first? Always feel left behind

Because Telkom are useless :P I'v also been waiting for my 10mb. Still nothing. 1 year after they announced it and I am still told, "Telkom is still currently upgrading exchanges to support the new 10mb."

Yeah right... I see these so called technicians sitting in their bakkies on the side of the road playing on their laptops.

My experience exactly (see my previous posting)

When I finally managed to speak to one of the techie managers I was told that, after upgrading the exchange, they were ramping up slowly so as to ensure that all was OK at the exchange. What they didn't say was that the ramping period would be measured in years <sigh>

What p*sses is that I had a very stable 10MB line before they decided to upgrade ...

He said that the exchange, having been upgraded, would be ready for higher speeds. He also said that the higher speeds would require additional - expensive - hardware, and that getting approval for the expenditure was not exactly easy, e.g. not like buying the boss a new Merc :)

Typical... As I move out of heldervue, they trial that!!!

Oh well. Where did you hear about it? Do you have a source?

yup - short version - one of my clients lines is syncing @ 12132kbps

long version. They phoned me 2 weeks ago complaining no internet. Went up there and everything was dead. Turns out modem was syncing, but no adsl auth happening. On the way home i noticed a bunch of telkom vans @ the big exchange on the hill. Monday morning everything was working again. logged into the router and noticed the increased speeds

Perhaps your line attenuation is too high (because you're too far from the DSLAM) to be able to get anything faster than 6Mbps. Just be glad that you can get at least 4Mbps without any issues.

Nah, got exactly the same story (along with it will happen 'automatically'), phoned and phoned and phoned and phoned and phoned and phoned and phoned and eventually........ I got put through to the 'provisioning department'. Sorry, cannot remember the name of the chap I spoke to and was transferred from 'new services' so I don't have a number either.

In a few minutes I had this:

Mode: ADSL2+
Line Coding: Trellis On
Status: No Defect
Link Power State: L0

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 18.4 13.6
Attenuation (dB): 6.5 2.7
Output Power (dBm): 10.3 0.0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 27664 1116
Rate (Kbps): 10015 1019

If your DSLAM is ADSL2+ enabled and the checker says the exchange is 10Mb you should be able to get 10Mb provided you are close enough to the DSLAM and your copper is good. The only reason I can see for provisioning at 6Mb is lack of capacity between the exchange and the next step in the chain, and they are not going to admit that.
