I suppose we are both approaching the same subject, with the same intended outcome, but from different angles.
You seem to lean towards a diet before exercise approach, while I lean heavily towards the exercise before diet approach. My bias leads me to assume most people go the diet route as it is the "easier" option. No need to get out there and sweat or commit to waking up earlier and spending hours exercising, just change the way you eat, cheat every so often, and tell everyone you are trying
