Does the callibration map on the optimiser.rain.co.za apply to 4G towers as well? Typed in my address and the dot that says the "5G router should be moved closer to" coincides roughly with the area that rain works at its best with in terms of overall network quality. Or is it rather where they are assigning 5G towers since 5G is not offically launched in my area.

Hi guys,

I have a few questions about Rain 5G (I have signed up but havent gotten response yet)

Does the R 1000 package have any FUP? Cause if it does then its a bit lame.... the 4g variant Doesn't have FUP and pushed it some months between 300 gb and 1 tb without any speed issues.

Health concerns? I heard that 5g isnt especially the healthiest radio wave out there and in testing stage it killed animals etc in european countries

Is the R 1000 package uncapped 24/7?
\

I am getting mine on Tuesday. That was the earliest it was convenient for me.

On the FUP, I told them I use about 600GB a month for downloads, Netflix, kids on Youtube, and download games, etc, and they said that was not a problem.

They said I can get up to 700mb but real world was 200-300, with around a quarter of that for upload.
I am currently on 20/1 ADSL with no fibre in the area, so if I can get a good 100/25 uncapped for R1000/month I would be happy.
I am in Centurion and apparently the tower is less than 200m away.

I confirmed It is a 24/7 service, unlike the LTE which is 19/7.

I asked about getting tied into a 24 month contract, and they said no, it is like the LTE where you cancel at any time, which gave me piece of mind, just in case Rain deteriorated and there were more options, I did not want to be tied down.

I am really excited and hope it does work. No one has my area even on the upcoming list for Fibre, and these 4G LTE caps are just not going to do it for me. As an avid PC gamer, you really have to buy new games online these days, so to be able to replicate my cap on 5G is exciting! Hope for the best.

So some feedback, guys came back yesterday, mounted an external unit, speeds were between 200 and 230. We then moved it higher and averages at about 400 now, so very happy with that. Problem is though, we got a different router now to use and they just could not get it to work. Will come back later this week with technicians. Did anyone else get an external unit and got it to work? If you plug the cable into a laptop or PC it works, it is how i am running it now, just to my PC. But the router just does not work. Also tried older wifi routers of my own when they left, not sure what we are missing. They tried 2 different router in case one was faulty, so not that...

I have it installed now. Get between 200Mbps and 380Mbps. They suggest having it near a window for best reception. Going to fiddle tomorrow with positioning it better.
holly smokes. i get around 90 megs on 4g wonder what 5g would do

Just wondering if it will be semi-stable for gaming. 5G is U.S shows incredibly good latency, if possible please send a screenshot of "ping -t google.com".

So sounds like the wifi is not working when you mean the router?

Wifi from an external unit probably wont be great anyway, best would be to use a separate wifi AP
With those speeds you want something decent, and 5ghz ac

On your new/separate wifi AP you want to disable DHCP server if it has it enabled

Yeah exactly that, so they provided an outside unit a Q2 that works well, this uses POE and then there is a data Ethernet port running out of it that we are trying to connect to the internal Q2 unit, which is a different device, and this is supposed to provide the house then with wifi. This does not work at all, so yeah we basically want that to be an AP, nothing more.

From outside into a PC or laptop works fine, just getting the 2nd router to behave like an AP seems to be the problem for now. They are coming back Thursday, so let's see.

Are they giving you the normal router to use inside as an AP?

If so thats quite awesome

All this and still only R1000 setup fee? :)

No, its one of these for inside... Q2

Looks nice, just so annoying that it is not working. Will try the AP route tonight and see.

Got my 5G today. Two very nice chaps from Rain came round with my router in a very nice bag, and we managed to get 400mbs near a window. I have plugged it in an area where it is close to my Asus distribution router, and getting around 300mb, which is great.

Been streaming off a few services this evening and all good. Going from 20/1 ADSL to this is like having my eyes awakened. Daughter and wife are avid CS:GO players and they are very happy. MyBroadband test is giving around 7-11ms ping.

Router itself has 4G and 5G capability, and has 2Ghz and 5Ghz wifi. Two LAN ports on the back.

Would you mind testing the 5G latency to UK or US if possible? Intrigued to see the results

Still could not get the inside router to work last night, anyway, will see what the guys can do if they come tomorrow, hopefully the whole house will have wifi...

Anyway, so from PC where Ethernet is plugged in to give you an idea of the speed, i downloaded Destiny 2 (80Gb) from steam last night in 35 minutes... wow.

I Rain 5G consultant phoned me today and said I can get Rain 5G !!! So happy, feel like a young lad on Chrismas morning!

He said that where I live is around 20 meters away from the 5G node and I will possibly have great speeds cause I am so close and I have a direct line of sight of the building that has the node on their roof

(I live on the 9th floor of my building and the one that has the node is direct across me. can see all the towers on top of the roof)

Possibly going to get my 5G in this week!

Edit*

When I do get my Rain 5G I will do a few speed tests and post them here :D
