Hai guys,

So I move in one month, and am planning on building an entertainment system to trump all systems.

It will consist of a 7.1 sorround sound, bluray, ps3, and apple tv.

All media like movies and tv shows, will be stored on a central 1TB drive connected to an airport extreme, which will stream media to all devices connected to it.

Now, we will not have any DStv (load of crap, in my opinion) so all our media will be downloaded or streamed from itunes and torrents. We will also livestream sports events from a livestream.

We have decided to use a 10mb line (our exchange supports it) with 50gbs of afrihost unshaped data per month. We chose the line because I cannot stand stuttering, and play a load of ps3 games online. We considered 4mb uncapped from mweb, but decided it was too slow.

If you guys have any comments, suggestions, recommendations, please post them here. I have not had internet for four years, so I don't know how this will turn out. Any info is welcome (if videos stutter, if games stutter, anything at all.

Thanks

for streaming yes a 10 meg line would be best, 50 gig is ok for a start but an uncapped account becomes necessary if you depend on it for all you media.

Axxess after hours uncapped if your not at home during the day.

For an allround account mweb 4meg/s is next to none.

1TB IMHO is also a little tiny on the storage side if you aim for the ultimate entertainment system, which in my opinion would include the use of HighDef media. If you dont doing HighDef then I guess it will be ok.

My current HTPC runs with 2x 1.5TB hdds, and the series alone fills up the 1 and a bit of the other.

Go for openweb gold 4meg more then enough for what you want to do also 50g is way too small you will hit your cap in a week.

HDD too small - in 2 months it will be full

I could never afford openweb gold, unless it was on a 1mb line

I know that 1tb is a little small, but the airport express only has 1 usb port. I also don't know if using a hub will work, or if it will slow down transfer. If any of you guys know a way to link drives, please do tell.

The apple tv 2 only supports 720p (it can play 1080p, but downscales it) this means all my streams are 720. How would 10mb hold on 720 streaming?

10 meg can stream 720p perfectly but your 50 gigs will be gone in a week as was mentioned before ;) and also have you tested your line? The fact that the exchange supports it doesn't mean you get a 10 meg line.

Invest in a proper HTPC, it's definitely worth it.

done what u are wanting to do u need to get a Axxess uncapped account for R899 the 50 gig u can use it up in 2 weeks :-)

More like 2 days if he can get a 10 meg/s line , I would do 10 gig per day on my 4 meg/s line so 20gig per day on a 10 meg/s line should be easy.

50gb aint gonna last buddy... :)

kinda confused at your "mother of all systems" comment vs "cant afford openweb gold"

Yep, the 1Tb is going to start annoying you very quickly - I have 6TB storage and only have 1.3TB free.

Would recommend a HP Microserver if you want to build a very nice low powered HTPC.

The system is being built in stages (ie amp, then speakers, then hard drive etc. ) so that is the main drain on the cash at the moment. Internet is being given a lower priority ATM, but will definitely upgrade when the system is done.

Does anybody know how streaming will be on a 4meg line?

It depends on what streaming you're doing...

People encode their videos differently. But as a general rule 4mbps (running at full speed) can stream most 720p.

I have a mediater 500x2 with a 3tb drive and thats full already with an uncapped line :). HD movies take up alot of space especially all my 3d movies. I have build a N40 HP Micro server with 4 2TB drives as a secondary HTPC and works like a charm as well. That 50GB will have to be increased If you going to stream in HD and game online and dload , with a 10mb unshape it will eat up in no time at all :)
