Interesting article from Moneyweb:

"Everybody working for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will be getting…no not a 13th cheque, but a 14th cheque, Paul Setsetse, spokesperson for the national broadcaster told Moneyweb."
 
Maybe they can afford to improve the quality of service now. The current state of television reminds me a lot of that ad.. Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah! Blah blah blah blah blaaah? Blah.

Yip, it's a pat on the back to the station that reports it all ! - well, all of it that the ANC would like you to know about, anyway ...
 
Wow. This makes me feel a whole lot better about being forced to pay them a licence fee even though I never watch SABC. What's next? SARS triple paying themselves out of taxes because they're also "profitable"? How can a publicly funded organisation possibly justify this? Stoke is right - if they're so "profitable" then why are we paying for a TV licence???

Oh yeah.. I just remembered... "It's the RIGHT thing to do"

surely the sabc is run via public funding (tv licenses) +ad revenue.
Their commitment is to provide you guys with quality programming in return for your license fee's paid in good faith. If they are turning a profit, then what is happening is you are paying x and receiving x-? in return...i.e. you are being screwed.

If they got extra money, pump it into documentaries, or locally made sitcoms etc. Pay for proper investigative reporters to find out the truth.

But to shout about it in the papers..."hey okes, we are so profitable that we are paying our staff extra extra this year" is akin to saying" hey okes, look how hard we screwed you this year."

this place is dof...
 
Many companies issue 14th checques, and if everyone is doing their job well, why not.

I don't sit in front of the TV all night but there are a few shows I watch regularly on SABC and that's about all one needs. I refuse to pay R400/mo for DSTV as 80% of the channels will never be watched at all.

SABC isn't doing a bad job.. granted, they aren't the BBC but then again the budget constraints are massively different.

Would be interesting to know what everyone's doing with their 14th cheque! :)
 
I've just got to shake my head at this one.

While I wish them well to thrive (It's not like the obscene Telkoms profits) it explains:

1. Why there so many @#$@ing repeats these days
2. Why there's are so many "current affairs" programs (They're cheap)
3. Why there are so many damn infomercials
 
Probably making a profit cause partly due to the fact that they lost the Grand Prix.........
 
Good for the SABC. I agree with MaD, and have said so elsewhere on this forum that the SABC is not as bad as we like to think. Go overseas and wade through the absolute kuk they have on TV there! SABC filters out most of that crap, and we get America's hit shows relatively quickly in SA (often faster than even Australia or the UK get them).

SABC also has a mammoth task on their hands, what with having only 3 channels to serve a country with 11 official languages. They have to use just 3 channels to broadcast enough entertainment, educational, public service, sports, politics etc; all in appropriate amounts (and in several languages).

They are also, as far as I know (and I may be wrong here) required by law (regulated by ICASA) to have a certain percentage of local content. Local content in languages other than English serves South Africans in more ways than one. It develops the television and film industry in SA (making SA a more attractive place to shoot internation movies and adverts - thus bringing in foreigners to hire South Africans and so on). Local content also plays a role in forging a South African identity (which arguably doesn't exist atm). Local content exposes SAfricans to other cultures that exist, quite literally, next door, but which we do not know much about as a result of the forced seperation of apartheid. Local content in languages other than English can also, of course, can be entertainment/infotainment for non-English speakers.

Not to even mention how the SABC caters for deaf people....

My (pretty much only) grind with the SABC - their news. SABC is failing in delivering independent, objective news. They are too close to the ANC.

Edit: Oh ya, one last thing - I hate how ALL the TV channels insist on turning up the sound when adverts come on. they used to turn it up just a tad, but in the last year or two they have increased "Ad-sound" by several decibles! How dumb are these TV people? Don't they know that when they turn the sound up so much, the first thing anyone is going to do is reach for the remote to turn it down.....but when someone has the remote, it's often the station that will change, and not the sound. Dumbasses.

I have to agree, SABC is much better than even UK's domestic channels and all their channels are in english!

In the last few weeks, I've been watching more SABC than DSTV, because there are hardly any good movies on (Idols?), but I'm paying SABC R225 a year compared to DSTV of R460 per month. R225 a year, is not alot to ask.
 
Living in the UK I find the local tv quite good.......Channel4 have some good documentaries and they have the series "Lost" on at the moment. Where would SABC get that, Mnet definitely would.

Not so bad ? - It's god damn rubbish !

Ok, so I have a problem with ALL tv in general - I despise it.
I'm currently house sitting for my brother and have to tape a few shows - I cannot believe I once used to watch this mindless drivel !

Yes, there are some brilliant TV shows, interspersed with 50% advertisting, which is MINDLESS. So yeah, rent the damn series on DVD when it's out, or seek other means.

SABC sucks - absolutely sucks. The news presentation is dire - it's so PC I just want to punch the presenters. Full of fake laughs about unfunny things. It's like taking a trip back to the damn 1970's - cardboard cutouts.
Presenters like Polystyrene Oyster (or at least, that's what I call her), adverts so bad, I almost vomit.

And the cherry on the top ?
There's is a LOT of propaganda and very little room for anything critical of the current government (namely, the ANC) - a recent example, the deputy prez being booed at a rally, SABC says "we apologise for not airing that footage" - WTF ?

Nah, sorry, TV is mindless cr@p for the masses, and SABC scrapes the bottom of the barrel of that cr@p.

But then, that's just me ... I woke up one day and realised just how bad TV was and did something about it - stopped watching.
 
I watch Isidingo every nite and talk about it with my gran when she calls. Great local show.
