15 Mbps Wireless DSL service from iBurst

R10 000 odd for 160GB @ 15Mbps = +- R62.50 per GB Not bad, but considering you can get 4 Mbps DSL uncapped for R3-4k, you really need the upload speed to justify this extra cost.
I think iBurst's 10:1 contention ratio may mean a better average performance, but it will obviously depend on the other providers. This is why it would have been nice if a contention ration was goven for all ADSL offerings...
 
Coverage? Pointless using it to link all those "branch offices" when there is no coverage.
 
This does sound like a very good solution. I currently have a 1MB service with 4 static IP's from IS and it costs R4550 pm. Excluding the line rental from Telkom.

Diginet is even worse!

Yes - as mentioned in the article the service is symmetrical. This means that even on the lowest speed you will get 5Mbps upload and 5Mbps download :)
 
They call it dsl, cause the backbone is connected to a 384kbs dsl line ;)
 
oh please this company is dead... They can't even get their wireless offering to run smoothly for 1 week per month. You must be crazy to use their services.
 
DSL is generally assumed to be "Digital Subscriber Line" only as the well-known copper-variant ie ADSL, but "Line" doesn't necessarily mean COPPER LINE to all the smart asses out there.

What's Line-of-Sight in wireless without the "Line" ?

Although "Wireless DSL" seems to imply something like PPPoE over wireless, in actual fact it just means wireless means of connecting a subscriber digitally. There's actually nothing wrong with that term besides the possible confusion of people thinking it involves classical/well-known copper DSL.

As for this product: nice move by iBurst, but again it's just aimed at businesses or people with R5000 to blow on an internet connection that costs less than a tenth of that (and is even aimed towards the residential market [ie Verizon FiOS symmetrical 15Mbps]) overseas.
 
This from a company that can't even get its own web site to work. Yes I want to use them for a business critical web connection. :rolleyes:

Does the 1 - 10 contention ration mean that my connection speed can drop by 90% when 9 others use the contended resources?

Which means that, when this service is in full swing, with all 10 contended positions being used, my service will behave like a 1.3MB/s connection?

Surely that is not in any way a good offering.

Or, am I missing something here?

ADSL services are contended at around 1 - 50. You still get your full speed most of the time due to the fact that most people don't use their line at full speed all the time.

If everyone on 4Mbps ADSL used their service at full swing then you would only get 80kbps. The iBurst service is definitely faster than that :p
 
I cannot find any concrete facts regarding the width of the backbone that the Telkom DSLAMS connect to.

But, I can conclusively say that there are very few people complaining about a 4MB ADSL line not downloading at full capacity off the Local-Only network. And, most of those that do complain are plagued by infrastructure issues that have little to nothing to do with the actual available download capacity.

For me to take this offer from IBurst seriously, I need IBurst to guarantee a minimum data transfer rate.

All wireless services are based on microwaves, it doesn't tell you anything about the actual technology and protocol that is going to be used.

It's definitely not WiFi, or WiMax, or WCDMA, or UMTS, or bluetooth, or FM, if you must get very technical here.

It's probably one of the licensed microwave bands, that iBurst has access to. I think its the same band they are using for their backhaul.

If it's not Wifi or Wimax, I don't see what other protocol can achieve a stable synchronous wireless connection with easily available equipment that can be installed on a customer's premises.
