I pinged google and got over 1800ms.

I pinged mybroadband and got over 1500ms.

Here's a traceroute to mybroadband:

How do I isolate and solve this problem? ISP is Telkom. Line is 10Mb ADSL.

Thanks.

Edit: It's back to normal now, but it's been spiking for the past few days. Who do I call? Is it an oversubscribed exchange?

That looks like a congested exchange. I see no other way that it can be consistently that high on the 2nd hop.

Congestion, have fun trying to get telkom to fix it ;)

Had the same issue. Luckily they were busy with upgrades on the exchange within a month since I noticed the latency.

All fixed now and I even have 10mbps :D

Alberton. The exchange in the CBD, I think.

I wonder what rgm-ip-esr-2 means, because it's listed on my router as my Active AC Name.

I suspect that they were doing something in the exchanges last night, cuz I had it too, in Boksburg. Ping was over 500ms for first hop. It dropped to about 200ms by midnight, and when I checked this morning, it was normal.

what a co-incidence, both my issues were boksburg :p

Bardene exchange I'm guessing? I'm right down the road from the bloody thing.
I logged an online fault with Telkom at around 23:30 last night.

Innnteresting. I wonder what that means? :p
Obviously Telkom were up to something last night. Just hope they don't do it again during peak hours, especially considering I didn't see any planned maintenance notices on the noticeboard.

if it happens again at night i will kak myself, you know what it is like playing MW3 on a 1200 ping :p

Likewise. Logged in to BF3 and was very annoyed at it being unplayable, until friends pointed out my ping was over 500.

What's worse is that I installed a brand new router last night, so I was in panic mode thinking the thing was busted. Extensive testing / changing settings / checking with old modem before I realized it was a Telkom issue
