good article - it is absurd & will be interesting to see what the cell companies say in response

also interesting to note that it does not appear that there will be any lowering of cell charges now that the cellco's can self-provide...i am aware that they are looking at wireless solutions to connect up the base stations now that they do not have to use a telkom line

in a phrase - we are being royally screwed
 
Yeah, I mentioned this a few times earlier this year in some threads, it crazy. Cellular providers are killing us. :(
 
I was very surprised to hear little or no public outrage over the Billions of rand profit the cell companies make each year. They are just as guilty as Telkom. I mean seriously, charging R10 for a Meg of data, whatever the hell the carrier technology is, is absolutely rediculous.

We need to somehow organise a public advertising campaign for radio/print and maybe even TV that pushes VoIP products like Skype to the general public. People need to know about their options... Imagine what a dent the telco's profits will take if joe public made overseas and long distance calls on their home pc's?
 
There should be a law prescribing the maximum profit that I company can make. Where does profit/good business pratice end and where does ripping off and stealing from your clients start?
 
Telkom owns 50% of Vodacom so what incentive does Vodacom have to self provide? And if they dont self provide why should MTN and CellC?

The utter folly of the govs so called "liberalisation" exposed for all to see ...

There is a much more elegant solution to this problem. Don't restrict who can enter a market only what they can do in a particular market.

Amazingly enough this works the world over. The ZA gov, however, seems to believe that the basic laws of economics dont apply in ZA.
 
I really wish that some of those articles at itweb were posted in the local newspapers, especially township ones.
