I am currently on a capped AfriHost account. I am looking to get a 1Mbps Uncapped acount. The prices between Mweb, AfriHost, and Axxess are pretty much the same.

Is it worth looking at the other ISPs, or should I just stick with AH seeing as I'm already there...?

Stick with Afrihost. To upgrade your account is a mere 3-4 mouse clicks away and their uncapped offerings have been completely revamped. I also reckon their big announcement, which is due tomorrow, will detail price reductions on their 1mb uncapped offerings (among others)...

AH's new range of uncapped products has been extremely good according to people who have used it. I say stay with them for now. At worst you wait to cancel.

My torrents on AH are going now at an amazing speed of 3.4Kb/s:mad:

Ja, that's an area where they seem to suck a bit. Problem with the grey and murky nature of torrents is one doesn't always know if the problem lies with the ISP or the health of the torrent.

As someone has mentioned, it's difficult to know whether torrenting speeds are due to the P2P nature, if the person you are seeding from has a slow line, or if there are other issues at play. I know others get speeds or between 350 and 400kbps on Torrents, on capped Afrihost accounts.

I am also looking around for an ISP. Currently with telkom and have no issues, but other ISP's are cheaper. Not sure who to go with. Any advice will be appreciated.

You have 2 options:

1. Go through the mission of signing up, canceling, next ISP, signing up, canceling, wash and repeat until you've been through them all and eventually sign up and be happy with OpenWeb Gold
OR
2. Just sign up with OpenWeb Gold and avoid all of the above hassle
(Sure, it may cost like R50 more...but that R50 will make the world of difference.)
The choice...is yours ;) :D

Guys, were going to be making an announcement tomorrow that is going to make a huge difference in choosing ISP's. Give it a day, and decide after we announce. I really think it will be worth waiting for ;)

Either way, looking forward to your announcement. I'm all for competition...it means we as consumers win! :D

Do torrents/P2P get actively throttled, or only when it conflicts with your AUP?

Telkom Internet.. currently expensive but they have said that they will leave the price the same when it gets bumped to 2Mb/s in August. The other ISPs have yet to make their 2Mb/s uncapped pricing public.

Speedtest just done:

... and the torrents fly all day long.

We don't throttle torrents, we simply de-prioritize them for "normal" protocols - like HTTP or HTTPS, FTP, SMTP, etc.

Measuring bandwidth by torrents is very unreliable, as you can never know what is happening with the person who is seeding to you. They could be getting throttled on their service, or just have a very slow line.

Telkom will be upgrading their uncapped accounts to higher speeds for free. So if you're on 1meg you'll get a 2meg account.

Hmm... seems I moved too early

Don't panic - we, like other ISP's I'm sure, are aware of the upgrades and we are preparing for them. Telkom hasn't published a final pricing and rollout. So we need to have more info before we can publish how we'll react. But I am assured that we are going to try where possible to keep pricing changes to a minimum (if at all)

It is true when the torrent have 1 seeder . When the torrent have 1,000 seeders it is a different story .

...but then again untrue with 3000 leechers. (So Ie. 1000 Seeders with 3000 Leechers) ;) Just saying, it's not always just about the seeders, AFAIK.

The people seeding the file could still limiting their torrenting upload. It also depends on whether each person seeding has the full file or not. There are simply too many variable to say with any certainty.
