1st car owner tips

Not really

And if they steal it they steal it.

Get a new one.

Rather buy cars like the OP is doing that don’t get targeted to begin with, because a signal jamming pouch isn’t going to stop them, it’s just going to make them use more extreme measures.

Whatever you do, don't waste money on a tracking device. If your car ever gets stolen I can guarantee you will not want it back after the bastards are through with your car.
Depends on what the insurance says.

It has become a requirement of the insurance (at least with ours) that vehicles listed as high risk hi-jacking is fitted with 2 devices. I don't believe the 1 series is in that list but I also don't have that full list.

The outcome is either they will not insure for theft/hijacking or your excess is doubled. For the latter, suppose his car is worth 250k, the additional excess is normally 5% which is 12k. Assuming an expensive tracker for R150/month, that's 83 months. before you reach that excess payment.

The best insurance quote (PPS) I got insists on a tracker installation citing car value. Unless anyone has brokers they can recommend? Apparently brokers can work magic

Congrats, the 128ti is a sweet package.

Hope you got a lekker deal seeing as there is no 128ti (yet) of the updated/LCI 1er.
Managed to shave 24k off the asking price incl road costs. Caught them desperate 2 days before xmas

Yeah depending on location and value some can be quite sticky on it.

I argued mine down to a middle ground from the perceived market value and what I actually paid for the car and then the tracker went away.

But that’s in Cape Town.

Personally I'd rather pay a higher excess or premiums than get a stolen car back. Been there, done that, never want to deal with that crap again.

Please don't cancel insurance after 3 months. It will come and bite you.

So you leave your doors open with your keys on the drivers seat when you go into the shops?

Because locking your doors and keeping your keys isn't going to stop them, and it's just going to make them use more extreme measures. Who cares mos, it its stolen just get a new one :rolleyes:

Now you are being a facetious chopstick and you know it.

Your insurance actually requires you to lock it and have the keys on you.

They don’t require you to compensate for the wireless key system, because it’s not that big of a problem.

The 1 series is not. List is made mostly of Fords tbh

Especially once Dirty Mike and the boys are done with it:

I was willing to pay R2600 with R5k excess just yesterday

Used a broker today and got R1600 (plus required R100 BEAME/CarTracker device) with zero excess - unless it’s a single vehicle accident then I pay R3500

OUTsurance 3400 - 5000 excess
MiWay 3700 - 7000 excess
Naked 2600 - 5000 excess
Discovery 4500 - 6000 excess (tracker required)

I’m 35 and finally brought myself to buying a car. Outside of the random drive here and there, I have never owned a car.

Any tips? From safety to must-haves-in-car etc. Especially in the South African context

This my list so far:
  1. Car signal blocker pouch
  2. Small portable vacuum cleaner
  3. Anti-theft steering lock (deterrent)
  4. I have run flats (do I need a spare?)
  5. Jump starter and air compressor. Thinking of buying this: RIZZEN Jump Starter & Air Compressor with 12000mAh Powerbank
    View attachment 1784642

A going analogue with steering lock might be a good idea, I don't think there is any criminal who still knows how to crack it.

PM broker details lol. That’s quite a discount.
Which insurance company is this with?

Don’t have sex on the back seat. The car will be cursed. For good.

Just the jumper pack and tinted windows. And good insurance.

Everything else on your list isn’t needed. Actually maybe the vacuum if you have small kids or like to eat pies in the car.

Congrats! What car is it?
I’d skip the jumper pack because if you don't use them, which he probably won't, the batteries die.
Rather use that money to get decent jumper cables and a battery charger.

Other than some great points provided above, I would look at a good set of rubber car mats to protect the original car mats.

Yes, I know, mats to protect the mats, to protect the mats LOL!

Fantastic to prevent mud going directly on the original mats and easy to dust off or clean.

An umbrella?
